I have the Rothco and its a tough brute. Mine has done the whole number - bushwhacking, car-washing, beach duty, you name it - and it has saved my dome a number of times. It IS very sweat-stained now though. Bear in mind a hat is not only good for sun protection. If you are moving through thorny bush it can save your dome from nasty scrapes too, especially if you have more head than hair like me. I like boonies because they can be folded up and stashed in your bag for when you need 'em. Personally I think light weight is critical.

You can get surplus hats at the surplus store for ten . It is called a cover in the usmc not a baseball cap

I have the desert digital ...love it. Also.own 2 other and I won't leave the house without wearing one or having it in my EDC bag. Also carry a Shamogh daily 2 of the best pieces of clothing I've ever had. I'm A old Marine and know these items are essential for daily use.

I've never been let down by R&B inc USGI hats.
They're American made, often around $15, and they still offer the classic woodland Camo.
Just got two of their boonies in today and am planning on a couple more of the patrol caps.
Been wearing a woodland camo patrol cap every day since my dad gave me his last issue cap he had left when I was 12.
I've gotta stock up so I've got a lifetime supply of them.

Good review! The Marine Corps covers are the best! Proper is good too. I have a govt issue type I bought in '84, still using it today! 100% cotton ripnstop.

Nothing beats the South African army bush hat which was issued in the 1970-1988 period. It is unique to South Africa and we manipulated it in many ways. We stripped the thread in the brim and washed it in Sunlight soap to fade it - this gave it "Houding" (attitude). It gave good protection against the African sun.

Good video. Should have had a Tru Sec in there for good measure. I recently picked up an R&B from a local Army Surplus shop. They are spot on. I like the shorter brim, but still not in bucket territory. I also have a Tilley, to be honest I think I prefer the R&B, it sits a bit lighter on the head. Plus you can buy 5 R&B for the price of a Tilley.

I've been telling all of my photographer friends to buy boonie hats for protection from the sun.  I get mine at a local surplus store but I'm I think I'm going to check out some of the ones you suggested here.

also, the latest boonie hat i bought was made by tru-spec. i like it solely for the reason that it has a little storage pocket inside the crown-of-the head area.

There is a Navy version of the Boonie, to go along with both patterns of the Marine Corps versions. Naturally, all three are the same exact cover. I have a Navy, and the jarhead desert camo.

Had to get a Navy patch to sew over the Eagle/Globe/Anchor on the jarhead cover. I didn't want people coming up to me asking me to eat their crayons for tick tock.

OH, and these covers are $15.83 at the Navy Exchange, if you can get in.

R&B inc. Usa made. All camo patterns. Less than $20. Worn one for years. Washed many times. Still looks new.

I use a 3 color usgi boonie... size 7.5 got it for $.99 as the high bidder plus shipping on flea bay. Less then $5.00 total. Serki (USMC USN) does make a great boonie.

I bought a boonie hat 50/50 rip stop etc for $9, in of all places, RiteAid. The quality was surprisingly excellant n it fit perfectly. Even so, I wasnt expecting much. Then I got caught in hard rain for 3 n a half hrs. Everywhere the hat covered was bone dry. I figured it was ruined but the next day it looked brand new. I love this hat and no matter how small I pack it down, it opens up n looks perfect. I guess I got lucky. Thank you for the heads up (no pun intended) on the options for American made hats n covers.

I wonder if it would be better to find the hat material you love most and just wax it for waterproofing.

You can add water-proof protection to any cotton hat by waxing the top side with Fjallraven Greenland wax. If you wax your hat the wax also stops sweat stains from happening too.
