Rita Hayworth is perhaps best known for being a Hollywood femme fatale and iconic pin-up star, but who she really was underneath her persona was very different then how she was represented both on-screen and by the media. She was a shy and sensitive young woman who managed to get a foothold in the entertainment industry by using her sex appeal. But it wasn't necessarily her idea to play those cards in the first place. Her first husband treated her like his pawn and basically pimped her out for his gain, and her subsequent marriages were equally turbulent for various reasons.

Even though most of her relationships ended up failing, for a brief period, she found a bit of happiness in a man that she was once quoted as calling the greatest love of her life. That man was none other than the late-great Orson Welles, who has been named one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time. Join FactsVerse as we take an in-depth look at the ups and downs of this famed Hollywood marriage and why it left Orson Welles with a sense of deep sadness that he would take to his grave.

It was heartwrenching to see her having a total meltdown in the lobby of the building where I and my wife lived. I didn't even know that she lived there, but I recognized her. Her daughter, Princess Yazmine Khan, was completely devoted to her and took very good care of Rita until she passed away. It was quite evident in the way she looked - well groomed and delicately perfumed. I made no inquiries whatsoever after that incident, but I did leave a card for Yazmine at the front desk expressing my admiration for her devotion to her mother. A few days later, we got a lovely thank you note and a beautiful bouquet of pink roses from Yazmine. I never saw either one of them again.

My father was manager of a large theatre in London back in the forties, Rita was making a red carpet appearance at a film premiere. My Dad got to meet her, he said she was quiet and gentle and her beauty was absolutely beyond description.

Facts Verse she was born in 1918 not 1928. She was 68 when she passed away in 1987. The problem was the early onset Alzheimers that made her paranoid. This causes a lot of issues because people don't understand the disease. Of course the alcohol didn't help as it masks the disease. Hopefully a cure for Alzheimers will come this century! RIP 🙏 Rita

Rita was a great actress and dancer, not to mention her beauty. She worked hard and was fearless. Never turning to plastic surgery, she kept her beauty until the end of her amazing life. Her hair...the best the biz ever saw!

Always felt she was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. Sad it was all a facade and that she was as unhappy as she was. One of her last performances was in a John Wayne vehicle as Claudia Cardinale 's mom. I think it was "Circus World". She was in advanced stages of alzheimers and had difficulty remembering her lines. The story I read was that they would tape them where she could read them. Mistreated and used. So very sad.

Orson and Rita look like a great couple. High profile director and a beautiful starlet. All the craziness from Orson made Rita left. That's good she went on her own.

I love Rita.
Orson was a great artist and yes, there were many problems here with their marriage.
Facts Verse (no big surprise because he sucks) left out the fact that Rita and Orson made "Lady From Shanghai" their one film together, in 1947, to do 2 things
1. Save their marriage
2. Show Hollywood that Rita could play a true evil femme fatale with no redeeming virtues.
Sadly the film did not save their marriage but they made one of the greatest film noirs in history with the single greatest film noir ending. Those who have not scene that mirror shoot out need to watch it immediately.

Only comment I'll make about Orson is, don't we ALL have major regrets about our past lives.
Let the one without sin cast the first stone.

This poor woman was doomed from the time her father used and abused her. Then to think the first husband did the same things to her! Rita probably has PTSD for her adult life. It breaks my heart. I'm sure Welles' selfishness didn't help. But the damage had been done.

Allow me to summarize -- without the long video.
Rita, herself, says: "Men would go to bed with Gilda", and wake up with me". She claims her relationships faltered, partly, because of this.
If a man truly knows how to pleasure a woman, and is not in it for selfish reasons, he could go to bed with Rita, and wake up with Gilda!!!
