Is not just in the US, in europe the deeds of the Portuguese are also little talked about even the Portuguese are unaware of the scale of Portugal's power in the 16th century some historians claim that the Portuguese navy was not only the strongest in the world but stronger than all other navies in the world combined, because the various innovations of the Portuguese, they had the best ships, best weapons, crews trained and specialized in specific functions, were the first to have what you might call a marine corps troops who went on ships not as sailors but as infantry troops, they were also the first navy where captains have to keep a logbook and draw maps that was transcribed and studied at the end of each voyage, these diaries and maps were a state secret. Portugal also had the longest lasting world empire it began with the conquest of Ceuta in 1415 and ended in 1999 with the delivery of Macau to China.

This battle was really a personal vendetta of Francisco de Almeida, the King of Portugal was willing to negotiate with the Ottomans and even tried to prevent the attack but Francisco de Almeida did not obey.

But yes in the 16 century war was a normal diplomatic tool, when the Portuguese arrived in India for the second time several ports controlled by the Ottomans and Venetians refused to sell spices to the Portuguese, the Ottomans had also killed the Portuguese who had stayed there from the first voyage to establish a trading post so the Portuguese just used their big cannons and destroyed the harbor and go to the next harbor where they already agreed to trade.

And it wasn't just Portugal that used this tactic, the united states themselves in the 19th century sent there navy as a tool of intimidation to force trade agreements.

This obscure battle was way more significant than most people realize. This was the beginning of the end of an economically asian-centric world and oppened the doors for European hegemony (Portugal didn't hold it for that long, but that is another story). Yes, the Portuguese intervention in that part of the world was often one of brutality, that should not be denied. It is not an affair to be proud off, but also should not be hidden (as it has been even in my country, to some extent). However, we have to realize that the world we know today was very much influenced by the turn of events that took place that day in Diu.

We aren't good at far Eastern and central Asian history in the European world. These largely literate areas have their own religions, national powers and histories as extensive and complicated as anything in the West, if not more so. What we do know largely comes from where and when Europeans came into contact with them or at least where they come into contact with us since writing came to Europe much later then India, China and the mid-East. The mid-East, Egypt and northern Africa were the first areas that we came in contact with so our knowledge of them is much better known. Islam, Christianity and Judaism started in the mid-east although Europeans changed Christianity as the New Testament was written by and Greeks and Old Testament was adapted from selected Jewish holy writings. The things the average Westerner, regardless of race, knows about African history is actually quite pathetic and is not really getting much better. .
