So Doc, I have one of the defective genes, my ferritin is 439. Some say I have Hemochromatosis, some say unless I have both genes, I don’t. I have never drank, smoked, or done drugs. I grew up very healthy, loved natural bodybuilding and weight training, did construction too. I was very strong for my weight. At 155, bench pressed 285 in 1987. Fast forward and chronic back pain since a 1994 car accident. Fibromyalgia for 17 years. Last year I saw a functional medicine chiropractor that I’ve known since 1985. I did infrared light therapy, in 3 months of quitting sugar, kept under 25 grams a day, took over 4, 000 medical supplements including fish oil, curcumin, you name it. I lost 28 pounds from 185 to 158, less than I weighed in 1979. Initially I felt so much better, but by the end, my chronic pain was just as bad as before. In hindsight, I’m wondering if the 6 tubes of blood, lowered my iron levels enough to get some relief? Why else would a strict diet, low sugar, all the supplements, and weight loss, not improve my condition drastically? Is it in fact Hemochromatosis, and nothing will help except blood draws?

Thank you, doctor, for giving me more insight into my high ferritin level. Now I can ask my doctor to do other tests you recommended. I had Flu A Feb ferritin 993, Mar 647, Jul 422. I have A1C 6.2, BPH PSA 8.6. The last visit, Jul, said he was not too concerned with any of the ranges. Recommended to keep doing my intermittent fasting & exercise.😮 I'm 72. I still feel he should run other blood panel tests. What should I ask him to run? Thank you for great informative video.

Thanks for your thoughts, Dr. Tom. I would ask if it is really "iron deficiency" anemia rather than an anemia of "chronic inflammation, " especially with his CRP (and additional numbers). However, I agree that not all high ferritin presentations = Iron overload. However, I have seen that all high ferritin findings present with iron "dysregulation." For example, an anemia of chronic inflammation results in iron locked up in tissues, and ferritin sequesters that free iron. With iron "dysregulation" secondary to chronic inflammation, HPA axis dysregulation, insulin resistance ensues. Not sure it's the other way around.

My ferritin levels over the past four months have declined from 1350 to 922 to 770 about one month ago. My doctor feels that the cause of this was a serious cut on my leg when I was on a cruise . I am on blood thinners and the cut developed a hematoma which took several months to totally cure. I’m pleased with the decline, however, my energy level remains low. What other tests would you recommend to see if there’s something else causing this high ferritin level.?

Talked to them about my issues, consultations are $500 p/hour and lab tests $3200-$6200. Supplements are hundreds of dollars. Not covered by any insurance. You have to be rich to go to this guy. Too bad

I have borderline high iron levels but low ferritin @ 19 due to donating blood, eating a diet of iron absorbing foods, and avoiding beef. I don’t have Hemochromatosis or drink alcohol. I drank too much beet too juice which caused iron overload and I tried to fix it by donating blood. Now, I’m borderline anemic. HELP 😢
