I want to be generous and say 'well Savile fooled a lot of people', but surely Mi5 and top brass knew about Savile. Why wouldn't someone have whispered in the Prince of Wales ear and said 'you might not want to associate with this man'?

Savile got his Knighthood in 1971. What the fuck had he done for that? He had only been a Radio 1 DJ and a TOTP presenter throughout the late 1960s.
I don't think he was raising millions for charity around that time. That came later after his Klunk-Click and Jim'll Fix It TV shows.
Now, I wonder what else he could have been 'doing / providing' for the Royals which facilitated this Knighthood?

To be fair, jimmy savile manoeuvred his way into so many 'high' and privileged places but he was like rot or woodworm or mould. Clever enough to hide his disgusting behaviour almost blatantly in plain sight! It was a shock to most people to learn of the depths of his depravity. Utterly sickening creep, playing the system to make himself look like such an unbelievably good person, and it proved to be unbelievable ultimately.

Saville played Charles for a fool. To Charles, he was an eccentric but likeable man who made him laugh, whilst also making millions of pounds for worthy causes, which the Royals admired. they became friends
