It works. That's the way you're supposed to approach a girl at, say, a bar. Don't offer to but her a drink, because it's cheap, and everyone uses it, and you're telegraphing your interested in her, forcing her to decide if she likes you. Instead, say "mind If I join you for a drink?". It's not exactly the thing in this clip, but the basic idea is the same: "I'm doing something. Want to join me?". It means you're going to have a good time, with or without her, but she's welcome to tag along.
