I’m so tired of all these legal and ethical hypothetical scenarios when it comes to gene editing! People are afraid of zombies or a master race, or pigs that fly or who knows what?!?! I’m looking for way to stop my wife’s C9orf72 ALS (no cure) from progressing any further! She is only 51 now, and going into her 3rd year with symptoms: muscle loss which is not allowing her to walk, speak, eat and now she breaths with the assistance of a ventilator. All because of this gene that keeps her motor neurons from speaking to her muscles (in a nutshell) I believe CRISPR should fall under the category of “right to try” with the patient assuming the risk.

The bio hacker that died did not die from the injection, but from drowning.

this video is extremely misleading first off the man that died was ceo for ascension a bio hacking company his name was Aaron Traywick and his death wasn't caused by self injection of mini circles which isn't cas9 crispr he died of accidental drowning at a spa later it was found that his body contained ketamine a hallucinogenic drug and his death was ruled a tragic accident second creating a virus or bio terrorism is extremely difficult and is not something that people will just be able to pick up using genetic engineering a more likely scenario is using a downstream effect which animal virus mutate to a human host and that requires no genetic engineering

According to the video, the bacteria which they provide us with the kit will be nonpathogenic but still one thing which is increasing my curiosity level is that, what if we mutate its genes and end up in manufacturing a home-made pathogenic bacteria

No. The random guy that injected himself thinking it would "make him stronger" is Josiah Zayner, who has the same credentials that people in "real labs" have. He was under no delusions it would make him stronger, he said himself that one injection was likely to have no effect at all.

Good pointer. I'm doing a crispr cas9 course at the moment, its very interesting. Though I feel like I should be able to do this safely at home, I should be, and am scared of the potential irreversible off-target effects that could occur in the fungi's genome (I'm editing fungal DNA). Who knows what that fungi is capable of until it leaves the lab and gets tested. With that said, crispr holds the key to saving millions of lives from genetic disorders, it can create novel cells that do not exist yet on earth (just imagine), and enable bacterial organisms to code for proteins that could enable the mass production of medicine.... Besides, if someone wanted to kill everyone on earth by producing an absurd quantity of some kind of crispr protein that randomly cuts and mutates our DNA for example, they would have SOME trouble keeping the production secret before a co-worker or a neighbor asks what the big lab is for lol.

you can make brewers yeast produce tryptamines instead of alcohol relatively easy.

Man, technology is amazing. People can now play god at home.

Regulation? You and who's army?
CRISPR has sprung out of Pandora's box, and the time for state-sponsored ethical regulation was never a reality, since CRISPR technology has since spread across the world.
Solution? More nation-state resources for institutions that can enact countermeasures to dangerous pathogens that result from the widespread use of CRISPR.

Imagine adding an nad booster gene, a gene that produces a 'metphormin' like protein, and a gene that produces resveratrol when under stress to a human being. We could essentially make people age resistant! We could potentially live forever.

I think someone killed that guy because he cured himself

150 $ for a cas9 plasmid isn't cheap
Even addgene sells cheaper
