Martin is spot on here. I have my B.S in Biology. I used it to get into Optometry school.
A biology degree is a great starting point on your way to medical school, PA school, dental school, optometry school etc etc.
I 100% agree with Martin, you should do labs and get as much research experience in college while you can. Within the actual scientific discipline of biology, you can’t do too much with just the Bachelors, you’ll need a PhD or at least a Masters. A biochemistry degree or chemistry degree or minor is very useful if you want to work in industry right after college!

I majored in biology and then went to medical school. But I could have majored in dance with the same result.

Biology major here and can confirm what you said. Getting involved in research and other extracurricular activities as early as possible is crucial for grad or med school

I graduated with a degree in biology and wanted to go to veterinary school. 4 years after graduating it didn't work out. Now I'm trying to switch to nursing. Luckily for me there are programs to where I don't have to retake a whole bunch of classes as long as I passed a competency test. So I am going for the teaching route to save money so I can eventually switch to nursing.

I got a Biology major, but jobs are resserved only for cities for Biology. I dislike the field of work so I do not use my major tbh.

I would say for bio majors if unless you just want to do research as a PHD it’s not worth it.

Instead you should be working towards a health care related degree like nursing, x ray tech, sonography or some other allied health science degree.

I am a medical lab scientist graduated with a bachelors in this program, make decent not great but decent money at $40/hr 4 years experience in a med-lowCOL area. Good security, benefits, a little boring sometimes but their are some interesting moments.

Get constant calls from recruiters for locums tennes position some as high as 70-80/hr.

These are fields to look into just in case medicine, PA, Dental etc doesn’t work out for you.

Prof. Goldberg, could you possibly do a video on getting a degree in classics?

Recently finished my Biology undergrad and i can attest to this fully. Take on research projects, network with professors (especially important), find out what you want to do with the degree as soon as you can, find internships, and dont give up after one bad grade (because more will come). Its a tough major esp. if you dont have any real interests or goals in mind except getting breaded

Martin, could you do a video on whether it’s worth “backtracking” in general? That is, taking classes after you have already graduated but wanting to pursue a career in say, medicine. I always appreciate your insights. Maybe a breakdown of time and money put into pursing a given program and whether it’s worth it in the long run

Microbiology is the best one without any grad degree. You get certified in histology, cytology, or blood testing for hospitals. Lab corp hires them. You get paid per hour and get up to 35 an hour eventually. However, software engineering and med school outperform them no matter what though.

From what I've heard the NP route is not worth it, basically because you'll have more or less the expertise and responsibilities akin to that of an semi-established Dr without the salary, mobility or autonomy.

And naturally people hear the word nurse and assume you just weren't good enough to get into med school and scream bloody murder until there's someone with the correct pronouns who shows up.

Can you do a video on pursuing an advanced degree like a masters or MBA? Having a masters is now somewhat required since almost everyone has a bachelors now.

What if I want to get into the environmental science or nature conservation field with my biology degree?

Watch out for the critical theory coming into biology.
