In this video Doctor O'Donovan explains possible signs and symptoms of bladder cancer; plus causes, prevention, investigations, treatment and more.

WHAT IS BLADDER CANCER?

Bladder cancer is where a growth of abnormal tissue, known as a tumour, develops in the bladder lining. In some cases, the tumour spreads into the bladder muscle.

WHAT CAUSES BLADDER CANCER?

Most cases of bladder cancer appear to be caused by exposure to harmful substances, which lead to abnormal changes in the bladder's cells over many years.

Tobacco smoke is a common cause and it's estimated that more than 1 in 3 cases of bladder cancer are caused by smoking.

Contact with certain chemicals previously used in manufacturing is also known to cause bladder cancer. However, these substances have since been banned.

WHAT ARE POTENTIAL SYMPTOMS OF BLADDER CANCER?

Blood in your urine is the most common symptom of bladder cancer.

The medical name for blood in your urine is haematuria and it's usually painless. You may notice streaks of blood in your urine or the blood may turn your urine brown. The blood isn't always noticeable and it may come and go.

Less common symptoms of bladder cancer include:

- a need to urinate on a more frequent basis
- sudden urges to urinate
- a burning sensation when passing urine

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer at the beginning of 2018. I had all of these symptoms . Surgery was performed to remove the tumor that was positive for cancer. After the first couple of years of screening every six months I now go once a year for life. For anyone that has never had it I pray that you never get it.

Contracted bladder cancer over a decade ago. Had surgery to remove it, took a few catheter chemical (not chemo) insertions of BCM into the bladder for the surgery. Six evaluations being clear of cancer.
I wasn't told how much was taken away, but I can't hold the urge to pee like I used to. Kind of rough on a road trip in between "rest stops", so I keep an empty jug handy.

Many years ago, about mid 2013, I noticed thin strings of red in my urine, which turned out to be blood. I told my family physician about it and he referred me to another doctor specialist. He diagnosed high stage two cancer and set me up for treatment.
The cancer hadn't penetrated the bladder lining into the surrounding muscle layer and was removed by surgery. After six evaluations I was cancer free. The only real problem was needing to urinate more often due to the smaller bladder.

Thank you for a very interesting video. My father had most of the symptoms mentioned. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer at 86yrs old. He did smoke but quit some years ago. He never had much pain. He died at age 89yrs. His cancer was only confined to the bladder wall.

Went to my doctor around 2 weeks ago. Couldn't pee one bit. Lots of blood clots that took around a week to stop. Today I found out the reason was a tumour in my bladder. Which sucks tbh. I'm in my 40's and really shouldn't be dealing with this bs yet. But as a smoker and yuss I have no real intention of stopping. And a family history of this cancer I guess it was my time. Hope it's good news in the end as I have to go for surgery soon. Just found out about the tumour today. Hopefully it's nothing. But with the problems I've been getting I ain't holding out much hope.

Scary stuff, pissed brown stuff last Friday, went to lab tests the same day. No inflammation, so this monday to the Urologist that ordered further tests. Today a new urine test(they are checking for cancer cells in the urine). Tomorrow morning a radiologist is doing a Ultrasound screening of the bladder...hope its not cancer. Had same symptoms 2 years ago, but it was never totally clear why( despite proper investigations). Male, 59 so approaching the risk zone....

An update on my case. Forgot to mention i pisseed blood only that single day. Ultrasound showed nothing related to tumours, same with the cancer cell from urine and psa from blood. Agreed to no further investigation at this stage. Will follow up if anything changes, still wonder from where all the blood was coming from...

Thank you for the information Dr. O’Donovan. I’m scheduled for you biopsy along with the cystoscopy this Friday, August 2 and I’m nervous. I was told I have micro hematuria. I’m hoping for the best.

I've just recently had a symptom of a large clot of blood passing while urinating. This seems to happen primarily after an ejaculation. I'm 65 and a smoker with a rather long history of an enlarged prostate.
