FTM Top Surgery: Why I Chose To Have Scars

Why I went for double incision instead of peri/keyhole top surgery, and was it the right decision for me?

I’m a 53 yr old mum who watches a lot of science, falling domino, & 1950s tv videos, so I’m not sure why, but your videos popped up in my feed. I just found out that my insurance is going to cover my top surgery—I’m only going to have to pay $328 instead of almost $9000! I might also be able to have it as soon as April 5th. I am so incredibly grateful. Thank you for making such fun & helpful videos on top surgery—they’ve totally helped me over the years :)

Edit 2 (7/24/20): I had my top surgery on June 28th, 2019. It went incredibly well—my recovery was very smooth and I healed pretty quickly. I love my results and my confidence and self esteem have grown immensely. I am considering having a small revision, but it would just be to make my chest a little bit more symmetrical. Revisions are pretty common with keyhole patients :P I recently went swimming in a lake with my friends, this being my first time swimming shirtless after surgery, and while I was a little nervous I also felt incredibly comfortable and free. I’m still dysphoric about certain things, but overall my transition has gone so well and most of my dysphoria is gone. :)

I was too big for keyhole/peri and was disappointed at the time, but my surgeon told me it's not about the scar viability, but the shape. 3 months post op and I have no regrets about my double incision. I am loving the shape of my chest now. <3

I'm a cis female who had a reduction done due to back problems. I have the same scars as you except I have the anchor one too. It's not only trans guys who have to deal with scarring 😁

I honestly just love the scars.. I don't know what it is?? It just looks so nice and really shapes the chest ?? Like it to me looks more masculine. I don't really have an opinion on the surgery type (I have a larger chest) but that doesn't matter to me. I'd love to have a story behind my transition.


Plus I can make up shit about how I got them.

Before my topsurgery I went to three different surgeons for consultations. Two out of three said I was somewhere in between but could definitely go with peri. The third surgeon said yes I wasn't very big size wise but he would not suggest peri. It took me quite some time to decide which technique I wanted to go with. But I ended up with double incision and I'm glad I did now! So go and listen to different opinions if you can and try to chose a surgeon that you feel the most comfortable with!

I had peri and it's honestly really toxic to say it's a "better" surgery than DI. I really like my chest now but after surgery I struggled a lot with it not being as flat as I'd pictured it, because most of the time you see peri on people who are either really skinny or really muscular and I'm neither. I had it because my surgeon said I was eligible, but I always expected to have double incision and would have been happy to have the scars. The only reason I wouldn't like them is for safety reasons if I was around really transphobic people. Anyway, like you said, there's no one Best SurgeryTM, it's just whatever's best for that person.

I love it when trans people talk about their experience. You make it much easier for those going through it that are afraid to talk about it to feel better and happier during such trying situations. Being cis, I don’t have the same problems, even if I too feel insecure. This helps me to understand the issues of trans people and see intersections in our struggles. Brings us all closer together, I think.

Had a top surgery consultation and it was the same with me. Size-wise I would have been eligible for peri but my nipples sit really really low. Nipple placement is important for me, so double incision is my option because the nipples can be moved into a position that I prefer.
