As someone who has been through anxiety, severe depression, has fasted from food as well as speech, has had a very active prayer and church life, and read the Bible twice, I'm here to tell you that the advice to fast the depression away or pray the anxiety away is dangerous advice. When you are anxious or depressed, you are mentally sick. The brain may be the one organ we have a little control over, but it is an organ nonetheless. And sometimes, through no fault of our own, it becomes ill. When you have the flu, you dont go to the gym. You stay home, get better, qnd THEN go to the gym. Its the same with mental sickness. Putting yourself through a mentally as well as physically grueling and challenging time such as fasting can leave you off even worse, just as pushing yourself too hard when you are physically sick will do. When I fasted and took my vow of silence (both on seperate occasions) I learned a lot and they were meaningful experiences. However, I did these things when I was both physically and mentally well. Had I done these things when I was mentally ill, I probably would not be here today.
