The High Sparrow recounts the history of the Great Sept of Baelor, the largest Sept of the Faith of the Seven, and the pious King who built it, Baelor the Blessed.

Baelor the Blessed might be one of those mad targaryens but not the concessional kind of mad. He had pure intentions and cared for the common people but his so called "visions" were likely just delusions and warped reality. Belief is a powerful and often underestimated thing, Baelor believed int he Gods so much that he ignored pain and exhaustion, non the less such behavior is not one would consider natural or sane.

Martin designed a fascinating religion. Its politics are a lot like Christianity back during the middle-ages. So in a way, it's historically accurate.

I am glad that Baelor died because I remain certain that he would have inevitably declared or caused a holy war against the North as the last bastion of the Old Gods of the Forest.

For all the good points the High Sparrow makes here, he was just another zealot hungry for power. He knew what to say to gain followers and he knew what to say to topple a kingdom if he'd had the chance.
