In this video lecture, educator introduces the cell and its important components. According to fluid mosaic model, cell membrane is a flexible layer made of lipid molecules. Cell membrane performs several functions in the cell.
Structure of cell membrane has two components phospholipid bilayer and membrane proteins. Protein molecules in the bilayer constitute an alternate transport pathway. Membrane transport refers to the collection of mechanisms that regulate the passage of solutes.

Two types of transportation occur in cell membrane active and passive transport. Components enter cell membrane through diffusion, osmosis and active transport. Educator explained simple diffusion, gating, facilitated diffusion and channel saturation.
Different factors affect diffusion. Movement of water from high to low concentration area through a selectively permeable membrane is called osmosis. Active transport is of two types. Na-K electrogenic pump transports Na+ and K+ ions out and inside of cell.
