Cloudflare Can't Stop Lying

I heard a bunch of stuff about the $120,000 CloudFlare bill, but I did not expect it to be this bad. I am actually horrified.

Sorry for drama-posting, I just can't fathom how they think this is okay and the lack of response is unacceptable.

Non technical people ruining a tech product or service is about as predictable as the sunrise.

Unfortunately when a big company gets floated onto the stock exchange, customers are not top priority, share holders are.. :(

"Unlimited is an invisible bar." This is so valuable lesson to me.

"Nice website you have there, would be a shame if something 'happened' to it" Mob tactics plain and simple

Wow, this hits close to home.

The email you read towards the end of the video where they mention "Mark", who now leads sales at Cloudflare, he was the CEO at a company I worked at before he jumped ship to Cloudflare. Mark absolutely ruined the company... basically had to leave in the middle of the night with his tail tucked between his legs to Cloudflare. Like even the other top execs had no idea he was leaving and it was with basically no notice.

He hasn't been leading sales there for very long, but it sounds like he's just continuing their existing bad sales org.

Unfortunately, something has always been off about Cloudflare's douchy attitude. Good engineering doesn't fix that.

I remember hearing just a few days ago someone mentioning that CF is one of the few big companies that aren't awful... I guess that is wrong now.

my view on Cf really turned 180 these past few days

Can we just appreciate content creators like Prime and Theo who will cover news like this and check these companies? I took you guys for granted but you guys are making the world better and these companies better watch it!

30:32 This reminds me of a different situation that Thor (PirateSoftware) talked about last year. Back when he worked at blizzard, he was doing some pentesting on customer support, and they didn't do very well. The people who were new did well, and the people who had been there for a while didn't do so well, this was because they got training when they started, but then didn't get any further training. He then got asked who failed to meet expectations (so they could be fired), and then refused tell them who it was, because it wasn't the fault of the employees, but rather the company, and they were just going to fire their best employees just because they didn't continue to train them, so they weren't as good at security stuff as the new people.

In this case it's too high expectations, and maybe not good enough training, so replacing their sales people may work in the short term, but it wont last, also it's not a good way to solve it in general.

It’s actually impossible to use the argument of “cloudflare just hates gambling” because THEY WERE WILLING TO PROFIT IMMENSELY OFF A GAMBLING SITE. If they did the unreasonable and actually paid up that contract, then the story would be that Cloudflare decided to capitalize immense profit from a gambling extortion tactic. Like wtf this situation is terrible

Halfway through this video, I immediately stopped what I was doing and started migrating some of my domains away from Cloudflare. Thank you for bring this to our attention.

Your DNS domain name is one of the most sacred things you own on internet, register it separately from your hosting/CDN. If CDN/hosting provider starts extorting you, you can at least change DNS servers (and wait for propagation). We were extorted by our previous hosting provider and it taught us a pretty hard lesson. Do not put all eggs in one basket.

On their Discord, one of the "community champions" keeps repeating the same exact line every time this is asked, "you've only seen 4 emails you don't get the whole picture". Still *not* an official company line, still not an appropriate counter-response, just "bro just trust us, bro".

Unlimited anything really gives me "Unlimited paid time off" vibes.

The fact that I have seen ZERO major news outlets mentioning this is incredible.

Cloudflare used to be a role model for how to make an excellent product and an excellent company around it.

This sucks. This is a shame, the whole growth at-all-costs company model is really hurting the world. What ever happened to companies that simply focused on making one really good product?

Like doubtless many companies we have sent this around the engineering team. This has resulted in a calm, calculated process of moving everything we have away from Cloudflare. No complaints, no public announcement, just, quietly leaving.

I bet we’re not the only ones.

Given 6 months CF will internally wonder what happened to all their business customers, and will never join the dots.

I remember when "unlimited traffic, but not really" was called "fair use" in some webhosting plans or something similar which implies that high usage may come with a price tag.

I don't really care about the company, but I hate the trend in big tech to not really care about customers. I've lost faith in them as a group, not just one of them, but all of them. It is sad that as an industry, they've gotten so bad I end up painting them all with the same brush. It means everything I build, I have to build defensively: not trusting anyone. At the start of my career I would have called that behaviour paranoid. Now it is just prudent. You have to treat every tech company like a wanna-be mob boss.
