That is one thing that i have always loved about Whitney voice on records and in concerts because have seen her live twice is she doesn't scream. She sounds just like her records but live she adds a little here and there but the song still sounds like the song... Whitney Houston is my favorite vocalist of all times...💯💯💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Patti’s is a raw and pure presentation of emotion and expression. It is wild but well under her control. It’s operatic in its drama and sheer size whilst simultaneously using gospel-esque drumming with a fat (nearly obese) pocket to counterpoint her emotion. The instrumentation and background vocals are weaving with Patti and trading all at once creating a symphony of soul. Listen to the sax and drums answering Patti’s calls (which is the mark of strong musicians on everyone’s part) whilst the BGV carry through the lyric of the chorus.

Whitney’s is refined and precise her delivery is richly dynamic and lushly embellished with her Whitney-isms. The instrumentation and BGVs in her arrangement are merely a bed of sound to showcase her instrument. Her arrangement is filled with emotion and beauty but it’s almost entirely driven by Whitney’s golden pipes. There is quite literally less sonic information in her arrangement which is evocative of a lot of her ballads as they were vehicles to show-off the undeniable glory of The Voice.

Both are valid and take immense skill and power to achieve. Both women were capable of singing in either style. However, they shine best when showcased in the way this video shows.

Patti started in a group so she by nature her live band is very reactive and musically impromptu to a point. People enjoy Patti because of the factor of surprise in where she will take a song. We know it will be big…but how big?😃

Whitney was marketed as a prodigious vocalist and balladeer so naturally her live bands are far more measured and structured because a Whitney concert is really a exposition of her voice. This why people were so hard on her at the end of life because her voice was compromised and by necessity her last tour performances (and band accompanying her) were more similar to Patti style because there more room for interpretation and modulation.

Whether people realize it or not I think people are entranced by the gorgeous sound of Whitney (rightly so) and entranced by the electric experience of Patti (who has a monster of a voice). But I digress Both are titans forever deserving adoration.

Both EXCELLENT!!! But completely different experiences. Patti is rock and roll of r&b and delivers as such. Whitney is a powerfully pristine pop and r&b balladeer.
To me, they’re like two sides of the same coin

No competition coz both these legends sang that song with so much vocal power and amazing delivery❤ though i have to say that I love the build up that Whitney does on this song when her voice gets beefy and higher, she always changed the delivery slightly every time but still powerful. I've watched her performance of this song a lot and that part with the build up towards the end always sends shivers through my entire body😅
