My best drive ever was with a 4-iron. I had completely lost the ability to hit driver. Par 4, 342 yards, I tee off with the 4, in a thirty mile an hour wind (behind me). I pushed it right, but didn't slice. I caught cart path, cart path, cart path on successive bounces and wound up pin high, off the green but sixty FEET to the cup.


Of course I chunked the second shot into a sand trap and managed to escape the hole with a bogey.

I played golf 80 miles north of Hurricane Andrew when it hit Homestead Florida in 1992. The first hole was straight downwind about 35-45 mph. It was a 389 yard par 4 and I was just short of the fringe. We figured 370 yards with a Ping Eye 2 real persimmon driver. The next hole was dead into the wind, I hit that same driver less than 150 yards. I still have the score card and it was to this day the best 98 I have ever shot. I was a solid 10 handicap at the time.

I also liked when on the final day he drove the green on the first hole and then made the putt for an eagle. That was pretty special too, and maybe the greatest feat in RC history.

I'm no Bryson fan but that early-2020s era where he took every boomer complaint about "the game's gone, all you need is power" and turned it into a rigorously testable hypothesis was absolutely compelling viewing whether you were rooting for or against him.
