Structures 0-1 Introduction

Have you wondered how the physical structural world around you works? How buildings, bridges, and sculptures stand up? Or, if you did understand structures, how you could think about and design better from a conceptual level?

Not an architect or engineer, but I wanted to say thank you for taking your time to make this knowledge available for everyone.
Your explanations and visual supports are great.
Take care.

Rephrasing the question to "what now?"... Good advice, not just for structural design, but also life in general. ;)

as a mechanicall engineer that i am, I have never ever seen that cantilever design that radical
What is the concept of that one ?. Minimun deflection, Minimun structure and minimun material, etc.
I will attend all your videos / lectures, and, for sure, hope to be surprised in each and every one of them.
Thanks for sharing and spread knowledge !
Pablo.

I allways thougth tension equal one was the answer, or, equal tension on all the beam ( i mean, the "wedge" profile, if you understand me ), but glad to see this design / answer / proposal.
Regards.

I'm a computer scientist, but I am enjoying your lectures thoroughly. Will it be possible to leave links from where I can study these things more formally?

Dear Paul, I went to MIT in 1969 to 1972 in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. At an optimization course, Professor Daniel E. Whitney proposed a cantilever design question to minimize deflection at the end under its own weight (with or without F at the end, I do not remember). l missed the session when he gave us the answer. Is it possible that the optimal cantilever has two cross sections, with a bigger cross section near the wall, and an abrupt transition to the smaller section, probably in the middle of the cantilever? lf this is not the optimum design, what is the optimal design?

lf you see him, could you ask him whether his answer is like that stated above? Was there an F at the end?

So, whose responsibility is it to analyze the structures; the architect or the engineer?

The way I understand this is that that the architect is like an artist; responsible of coming up with ideas of structures that will look nice given various socio-cultural or even religious conditions of the users. Then, the engineer would take those ideas, make calculations, and determine how to build those structures as efficiently as possible (with just the right amount of materials at the right places).
Is this correct?
