Find the square root of negative numbers

In this video, I find the square root of negative numbers. Technically there is not a square root for negative numbers so you can multiply the square number by the square root of negative 1.
The square root of negative 1 equals i.
For example, the square root of negative four equals 2i

Don't forget that there are actually two solutions, +2i and -2i.

I don't get why school didn't teach that. It's so simple when you explain it!

Completely off topic... but his handwriting technique in drawing the number: *_4_* is oddly unique

I actually thought that I was the only one who hold a pen like that

what about for a number that's not a perfect square? like the answer would be a decimal number.
for example, what is √-43?
how would you solve that?

just square root it as positive number then make it negative and add "i" lol

Sqr root of -1 is actually 1 * -1 but it is impossible to express this in a single number... maybe something like ±1

Do regular surd rules still apply?
So...
sqrt(-54) = sqrt(54)xsqrt(-1)
= 3sqrt(6)i

great video, but can someone explain to me why they chose i and not anything else?
