My theory is he go back bc if he stay there the portal would rip him in half. The key was the one that open the portal and closed it when it was destroyed

bruh it was explained in the movie that once the key was destroyed it will charge an energy as powerful as a supernova and the gravitational pull pulled everything to the portal back with unicron and the reason why wasnt so fast is that hes low on eneegy thats why getting the key was important for him to feast on planets
