O Night

Al-Husari al-Qayrawani was a Quran teacher and scholar of the Arabic language from al-Qayrawan in Tunisia.

He lived a hard life, he lost his sight at a young age, his child died, his wife left him with another man, lived the crises of the Banu Hilal war, and had to leave his home after the city was destroyed.

He composed many poems of elegy for both his son and home. However, this didn't prevent him from having a good spirit and a great sense of humor sometimes in his poetry. And he would say about himself: "I'm a gold bullion that endured much pain inside the fire to reach this state of fineness."

He produced a great collection of genius romance poems, including his most famous one in the video, in addition to praise and satire poetry regarding the Andalusian kings during The Kings of the Sects era.

It's said that he had become too popular that the kings of Andalusia were competing for his praising.

Died at 488 H (1095 CE)

my translation:

o night, when is it the lover’s day? —
is it the day of doom? —
late-night talkers sleep
and he doesn’t—longing keeps him

the stars cry for the nights
he spends gazing
consumed by the softest gazelle
that sprinted, escaping gossipers

in my sleep my eyes set a trap —
even there i can’t hunt her
and i’m a skilled hunter ---

captured by the most delicate —
idol of temptation i desire
but do not worship

sober, yet with a drunken gaze,
her mouth wine-dripped,
she draws a sword from the pupils
her sleepy eyelids sheathed —
and the blood of the lover sheds

there is no punishment for committing murder
with eyes when your hands are innocent

o you whose eyes shed my blood —
your cheeks are red —
why do your eyelids deny
what your rosy cheeks confess?—

for Allah's sake ---
i ask sleep to seize me:
it is there i go to see you

what will it hurt for you
to soothe the ache of a lover wanting
to close the distance you keep putting?

he is almost lifeless—they will cry for him
tomorrow or after tomorrow he will die,
will you see him one last time?

o people of love,
we have a lump in our throats
made of our tears

all your lover wants is you
and yet destiny divides —
how delicious unity is! —
until days in departure deny

my heart, how do you bear this?
others devilishly deprave love ---
i am the most honest of lovers

(i tried to keep a shadow of a metre--a sense of structure--as well as English poetic devices such as rhyme, enjambment, and alliteration. i might have redacted a line which i felt weakened the poem in English. i also rearranged some lines, but all of that as little as possible.)

The fact that I found this channel when I decided to stop listening to music is a miracle on its own! I found the perfect replacement and the replacement is even better than music! May Allah (SWT) bless the channel owner for providing such quality content and helping us out.

How much lucky the Arabians are! They belong to arabs & arabic, they understand every single words of Quran & arabic poetry, it's their mother language. I wish I knew how to speak in Arabic. I am struggling so much to recite Quran with meaning. Pray for me, you're the luckiest. Don't forget Allah either you're so fool to be regretful.❤❤❤

Assalamu Alaikum to my all brothers and sisters wherever you belong to.😊
