The 2006 World Cup final will always be remembered as the last time, Zinedine Zidane played for the French national team. The talented footballer was considered one of the best footballers in the world and was part of a Real Madrid team that was so good, no team wanted to get on their wrong side. Now, let’s get back to the 2006 World Cup Final. You see, Zidane’s penalty kick had already seen off Portugal in the Semi-finals to set a mouth-watering clash with Italy in the finals. And with Zidane already announcing that the World Cup would be his last appearance as a footballer, surely it was time for him to bow out in glorious fashion. Or so we thought. Well, it surely was not a happy ending story as the famous French man was shown a red-card for headbutting opposition player, Marco Materazzi on the chest. Ouch that must have hurt pretty bad.

But why did Zidane headbutt Materazzi? Join us as we find out in this video.

He could go out with glory, but he decided to go out like a legend

We wouldn't have reached the final in 2006 without him, so most French forgave him immediately. In the End Zidane will always be remembered as a legend and Materazzi name will be forgotten.

Zidane might have lost the world cup but he hasn't lost his honor.

Zidane also revealed the truth in an exclusive interview he gave for his 50th birthday. Whilst this moment might have been infamous and contreversial, I feel we can still relate to his reaction. As he himself said, this sad exit is also part of Zidane’s career and life. He remains a legend regardless, has brought so much to football, and isn’t done with his contribution yet.

Actually, most of the 1998 World Champions have now turned 50, and their legacy still lives on nowadays. Zidane and Deschamps are still coaches nowadays, not to mention the former was the team’s superstar, and the latter was the team captain.

The referee didn't see it.
The linesmen didn't see it.
The big screen in the stadium replayed the incident and thats where the refs saw what had occured.
Earliest use of VAR maybe???

If Zidane kept his cool composure and focus, this game could have ended much differently, everyone on the opposing team is out to throw you off mentally, and this comment destroyed there chance at an other world cup 🤯

In all fairness, requesting his sister instead of a signed jersey is an understandable counteroffer
