Haiti Gang Boss Dead After Gun Battles in Port-au-Prince
Показать описание
There’s been yet more chaos and violence in Haiti as gangs and police engage in gun battles on the streets of Port-au-Prince.
One of the most recent gunfights resulted in the death of gang boss Ernst Julme, known as ‘Ti Greg’.
Julme was killed in the Petion-Ville neighbourhood of Haiti’s capital city.
The neighbourhood contains a number of upscale hotels and embassies, many of which have evacuated staff in recent days.
Julme was head of the 'Delmas 95’ gang, which was part of an alliance of gangs headed by Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Cherizier.
Haiti entered a state of emergency in early March after Cherizier called on gangs to unite and overthrow the government.
The conflict and ensuing chaos has led to widespread death and destruction across the country.
Julme’s death comes a day after the body of another gang leader known as ‘Makandal’ was dragged through the streets in a suspected vigilante killing. Powerful Haitian vigilante groups like ‘Bwa Kale’ are often just as violent as the gangs they’ve sworn to destroy.
Negotiations to form a new presidential transitional council have made some progress recently. But with gangs threatening politicians that might take part in the council, Haiti’s future remains uncertain.
