TV channel Euronews on Tuesday opened a new office in the heart of the EU quarter in Brussels. EU Commission Vice President was among those that attended the opening, together with several dozen EU officials and other interested parties. The office takes up two floors, is about 400 square meters, includes a three-camera studio, a master control room and an edit suite, and workspaces for about 20 people.

At the opening, Reding said taid that strengthening Euronews is one of 25 proposals in the EU Citizenship Report 2010; Dismantling the obstacles to EU citizens' rights.

This report says that the Commission "will explore ways to further strengthen information on European affairs, characterised by independent, professional and high-quality reporting; in this context, the Commission will also explore options for a more sustainable financing of Euronews. The building up of a Brussels studio for Euronews will be encouraged."

Euronews is by origin a traditional tv-channel controlled by public broadcasters mostly from the south and east of Europe.

It baffles me why French is chosen as a communication language. Only 1 out of 27 countries speaks it and a few converts in Belgium. The rest speaks/understands English not French. Especially in the new EU countries. In the old EC times (<2004) French might have been important and some old employees still use it, but it is really running on it's last legs.

Please Euronews, keep up the good work, but try to use a language everybody understands in these types of general announcements.
