Canada Terminates Popular Student Visa Scheme, Indian, Pakistani Students Affected
Canada has abruptly ended its popular Student Direct Stream (SDS) program that allowed a fast-track study permit process. The program ends effectively on November 8 and applications received by 2 pm ET will be processed under SDS. The Canadian government said that the move was aimed at giving all students equal and fair access. The SDS was launched to simplify the visa application process in 2018 for students from 14 countries, including India and Pakistan. The applicants were asked to meet the scheme’s requirements, which included a Canadian Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) worth CAD $20,635 and English or French language test scores. The move reflected Canada’s push to control its immigrant population amid growing housing and resource strains in Canada.
