Why is Your Freezer Frosting & Fridge Freezing

Roger has some problems with his Haier fridge. The freezer is frosting up and the fridge is freezing over. He has a solution and it's not cheap sadly.

Refrigerator repair is very hit and miss and the engineers are far too quick to replace random parts, so Roger has some very good fridge troubleshooting advice, which is to buy a decent twin cooling fridge in the first place!

Misleading title there Roger, should be titled "I don't know why my fridge freezer isn't working so I'm buying a new one".

Great video as usual Roger, thanks for taking the time to share. good luck with the new one, I hope it works perfect for many years. All the best mate..

Thank you, only video I found to explain how the side by side fridge really works. Well explained with knowledge: "borrows the cold from the freezer".

Thank you Roger for your most common sense explanation of why the fridge and freezer can impact each other. NJ. USA

My 1971 frost free still working fine. No mechanical motor to move air from freezer to refrigerator. (Whirlpool brand USA) 2023 now.

These newer models are Over Engineered.

This was the most simple and easy to understand video of how these things work and how they can fail. Thank you from Oz.

Roger is a crafty devil, creating this whole story for an opportunity for extra product placement. Im sure Captain Birdseye, Findus and McCain will look after him lol

Seems like many modern appliances (and cars!) are all about gadgets and fancy looks rather than robustness, solid performance over time and ease of repair.

I always think of the Numatic Henry vs Dyson vacuum argument. The Numatic is such a simple, but incredibly effective design at an excellent price point.

I've found that overloading/filling up your fridge, creates a restricted air flow, hence a delayed and or inconsistent temp through out your fridge, sensors over compensating, thus erratic cooling and performance ... answer ! Dont be greedy 👍

"So he throws a new part in here, then comes back and throws a new part in there". Rectification by trial and error is the hallmark of a head scratching "I dont know what the trouble is really"!

Thank you Roger. Fantastic sharing. I was having a over freezing freezer on my 13 year old Sharp refridgerator.

I recall 25 plus years ago being told those fake usa style fridges are crap, due to all the reasons you stated .the engineer said they need two pumps but only fit one for cost cutting, again what you said. Cheers Rodger

a classic example of money saving tech.. sharing the cold air and having to make something else to stop it malfunctioning. Freezers Icing up is a problem all over the internet as I have found in my own searches. Thanks

Well, that was much more interesting than I expected!

I have a Hotpoint fridge freezer that uses a similar idea of borrowing the cold. I bought it in 1995 and it is still working without a single problem all these years. Just goes to show, sometimes you get unlucky things just go wrong.

X Roger, this older video appeared in my feed because I watched ‘my mate Vince’ on YT wrestling for over an hour trying to fix his fridge/freezer - the power of the algorithm. Vince was ultimately successful but had an interesting and painful journey that is way out of scope for most homeowners. After watching both videos (and being a ‘real engineer’ myself) I draw the following conclusions:
(1) There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the design of your old fridge/freezer.
(2) These appliances are very simple bits of kit but they have electrical, electronic and mechanical parts and they can and do go ‘wrong’.
(3) The ‘professional’ who came round to sort out your fridge freezer did not know what he was doing and did not have any diagnostic skills and was unable to work from first principles, but as you say throwing parts in out of desperation (and to get on to the next job asap).
(4) If you watch Vince - he starts off from a zero knowledge base and just perseveres until he gets to the bottom of it - he stumbles around, gets as confused as fuck sometimes - but gets there in the end. It is painful to watch.
(5) The biggest challenge for the homeowner is obviously understanding the principles and actually where the key components are located BUT much more important how to access them and remove the various covers without breaking any of the quite fragile plastic mouldings - beyond that knowing how to work safely and measuring continuity and resistance on a multi meter.
( 6). All design is a compromise, design choices may improve reliability or reduce it and while your refrigeration engineer recommended the twin evaporator design choice - from a reliability perspective it may not actually be more robust than the fan transfer design (reliability studies are a science in their own right).
(7). I think you got unlucky, a Friday afternoon production model colliding with a service tech who did not have a clue.
