Mutate is one of the newest mechanics in Magic: The Gathering, and also one of the more complex! Here's a quick explainer video covering the ins and outs of turning your creatures into...well mutants!

We'll have more of the What is...? videos coming out - if there's a particular mechanic you want to see explained, let us know in the comments!

I want to get into Modern but have no idea where to start. You guys should do a beginners guide to modern and it's deck archetypes and techs

Holy shit. Its like... the most voltron mechanic after equipment. Also I was confused because it sounds like a simic thing but it's a mechanic for the whole set.

i don't get when the mutate trigger happens tho
if i have a regular creature on the field and I mutate onto it, then it is the thing mutating, which means I don't get the "When this creature mutates" trigger right?
or does that wording include when that creature card mutates onto something else as well. If that is the case, if I mutate Glowstone Recluse onto another Glowstone Recluse, do I get 1 trigger of +1 counters or 2 triggers (one from the creature already in play and one from the new creature)

Does the power and toughness combine or is it only the abilities that act as one?

Does a mutated creature on top still suffer from summoning sickness? Or is it considered to still be the bottom card(s) for this rule?

What about if mutated creature is romoved from game/exiled by Flickering, blinking, or enchantment like Conclave Tribunal? What would would happen when it comes back?

Then there are effects that flip cards face down or Morph them.

Also, no Boshido?

So maybe I missed it but is the creature subtype the top card or the collective of all the cards in the pile?

When a mutated stack dies does each creature entering the graveyard count as a separate trigger?

If you exile a token with something like oblivion ring or something, the token is exiled forever, even if the ring is destroyed. Does the same happen with mutate creatures under a token?

Thanks for the info really helpful. Just small feedback: The background music and sound effects make it hard to understand what you’re saying. Some occasions where sound effect made it impossible to understand keywords in the phrase.

You only give an example of what happens when the mutated creature goes on top. What about the bottom???

if a legendary creature mutates into non legendary, does the legendary creature lose its legendary state?

If you return a mutated creature to it's owners hand and that mutated creatrue that has a token underneath, I assume that token goes bye bye
