How Viruses Like The Coronavirus Mutate

Genetic mutations aren’t as scary as they sound. With RNA viruses, like the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that causes COVID-19, they’re happening constantly — basically every time it replicates. But not all mutations stick, and not all the ones that stick are bad. In fact, mutations are actually necessary for tracking and containing COVID-19. Here’s how viruses mutate and why you shouldn’t be worried when you hear about them.

Sounds like something the mutated cororavirus would say.

As a biomedical researcher, I think it is great that the mutation rate of SARS-CoV-2 is comparatively low (currently, it is even estimated to be lower than the rate of SARS, which already has a very low mutation rate compared to other RNA viruses). As mentioned in the video this could be great news if we want to develop an vaccine. A recent study has also shown that SARS-CoV-2 is probably not able to spread in dogs or livestock but might (unfortunately) replicate in cats (I recently made a video about the evolution of COVID-19). Stay safe everyone!

History will repeat itself and I have a feeling that the mutations will be something to worry about.

Where have i heard this before.... OH RIGHT BACK IN JANUARY

Literally everyone: The coronavirus is nothing to be worried about.

Scientists:“The virus is mutating slowly and it is unlikely to develop advantageous mutations”
Omicron variant that spreads 500% faster:” I am about to end their whole career “

This video is a simplified explanation of some of the lessons in genetics. Glad that I watched this. Found more information about covid.

Mutations are still scary, You'll never know maybe there's a chance it could mutate to some deadly symptoms.

7:15 "...because, if there is no ongoing transmission, there is no mutation. Then, we really have to worry." What does this mean?

I think the worry about mutations have more to do with immunity more than how it transmits.

Once people start developing an immunity to the current virus there is then environmental pressure for it to mutate.

At this point, I'll just wait and see. "Experts" have said a lot of things and then backtracked a month later.
