It’d be nice if the dot would actually force rail companies to comply with higher safety standards, rather than “urging” them to improve their equipment. Why would they? Profit is the motive, humans who run corporations aren’t charged or penalized because it’s the corporation that causes damage (and somehow the corporation is its own entity, separate from the ones who run it)… why would they improve equipment if there are no penalties for not doing it? Or a measly fine at best?

One would think that the trains were inspected before leaving, considering the load they were transporting was dangerous chemicals. But what I know.

Wheel bearing fires come from zero maintenance. We get them after maintenance people pencil whip maintenance records instead of doing their lubrication routes.
Bearings at failure stage first exhibit noise and vibration for hours. Next they begin to heat until the bearing race fractures, which also takes hours.
Now things start to turn cherry red and burn. Metal softens and starts to fling chunks off. Grease lines ignite.
A seized wheel bearing should not derail a train. The metal mass is so huge on a wheel carriage that it will transfer that heat from the high to a low continuously.
The wheels are outside the load being carried so they should not ignite the contents inside the tank car.
I suspect sabotage or the worst maintenance history in the modern world.
I would place my bet on sabotage.

Now that I have had time to cool down over this. By this I don't mean the accident itself. I mean the "en loco parentis" godlike attitude of the govenor of Ohio and the companies involved including the EPA. "En loco parentis" means basically this: "to protect you from yourself because we know what you can handle with regards to information we know and are better than you at handling that info". It also means "in place of the parents". It is why we have to wait til 2038 to get the rest of thd report on JFK. Don't believe anyone who says it's fully released already. It's also why they withhold a plethora of info because they feel godlike in keeping the info for themselves. Self righteous false bravado. They forget that the victims deserve to know what that spill is doing ecologically and physically. If it was up to me I would bottle the ground water and force the godlike men in charge drink it down. The truth would pop up like vomit. 🤔
