Watch stuff and learn and chill hi whatsup ⚔️👋🧐

Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through YouTube videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

Turkey joined NATO in 1951 when it was being firmly run by Secularists from the Kemalist side of Turkish politics so their membership is from a loooong ass time ago.

1) 1:33, Turkiye is not an Arab country, it’s bordered with the arabian peninsula but the people living here is Turk by the constitution and arab minorities are smaller than other minorities to count.
2) Turkiye’s EU process was always hard. When they wanted the membership in the 90s, the biggest problem was the cyprus issue and the lack of some rules in the law. After Erdo came power, the west was actually very fantasized about us joining in. That changed after 2007 and got worse after 2016 coup attemp and Erdo’s turning the government into the presidential system. Nowadays, it doesn’t look like we’ll join and the average western people already have supersititions towards us. Since we also host many syrian refugees and EU pays us not to let them into Europe, they won’t accept our membership because that will allow the eurozone and thereby free passing of the refugees which europe can’t handle

maybe you don't understand. NATO is an Atlantic military alliance. You must be a country with the Atlantic Ocean in between. The EU is not an economic union, but a political one, which obviously also includes the economic one.

An EU membership is out of question because simply the power division in the EU is set by population size of a country. Germany and France having the largest populations would rank 2. and 3. respectively if Turkey were to join the EU. That alone is the reason this will never happen, they are not going to give up control to Turkey. It's the main reason why Turkey hasn't joined yet and why the EU keeps stalling the membership since more than 40 years bringing up new criterias and excuses continuously until today. Both sides know this very well, so Erdogan keep saying "we want to become a full member" is just a show to keep the EU candidacy funding flowing. Angela Merkel offered a "privileged partnership" years ago and would be a win-win for everybody, allowing Turkish citizens to travel visa free to EU countries and vice versa. Being part of the customs union, adopting EU laws and thus binding Turkey closer to the EU and its values. But without having a say within the EU. I think that is something everyone could live with, but Erdogan doesn't want that unfortunately. And regarding NATO, Turkey paid its membership with blood in the Korean War (check Battle of Wawon for example). It's really unfair how Turkey is portrayed sometimes like a sabotaging factor in the alliance, when in reality the country sacrificed a lot and were a vital part so far in numerous wars and conflicts. Unlike Sweden and Finland that cried like spoiled children who didn't get what they want just because they feel entitled. Interests must be respected both ways.

Currently, Turkey is rather moving away from the EU.😐

No they won't, no matter what they do, as long as there is the issue of Northern Cyprus. The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member and as far as they and the EU are concerned, the entire island is part of the EU. Meanwhile, Turkey still supports its puppet regime in Northern Cyprus. Until they give it up (which is very unlikely), Cyprus and likely also Greece will not agree to their accession.

1) Turkey joined NATO in the 50's, that was a long time ago, and the political situation back then was completely different.
2) NATO is a military alliance. It is formally about supporting democracy/human rights, but NATO can and has let in dictatorships (For example Salazar's Portugal, and the military junta in Greece)
3) Even if Turkey veered away from the values of NATO, there is no mechanism for kicking out or expelling a NATO member. The only way for a country to leave NATO is if the country itself wants to leave NATO.

Not all Muslims are Arabs. Arab is a race. Islam is a religion.

You are right about NATO, and so many people want Turkey kicked out of NATO (Turkey's importance to NATO is exaggerated, Istanbul can be seized if they keep stalling in favor of Russia). But there is no way to kick people out of NATO, so right now people are mostly either putting up with or ignoring Turkey within NATO, and if they wanted to exclude Turkey they'd need to make a new alliance and just not invite Turkey.

This video skipped over the massive issue of Northern Cyprus. Lookit up Connor. Turkey have approx 10, 000 troops permanatly in Cyprus after the invasion in the early 70s. The captital city of Cyprus is the only divided capital on the planet. The UN police the green line that divides the country even now. Turkey declared Northern Cyprus as an independant state after the invasion. This new state is not recognised by any other UN member. The British still own and administer two area of Cyprus known as the Soverign base areas of Akrotiri an Dhakalia. These areas fall to the UK MoD. Look it up it really interesting. Theres a video on the ghost city of Famagusta check it out. Turkey will never join the EU as the government of Cyprus would never vote for it.

But Turkey is _already_ a NATO member. If it were to apply now, I'm not at all sure it would be accepted.

EU is not just an alliance. It is a single market. This would enable all turkish citizens to travel to and live in EU countries, this would enable turkish government to veto EU resolutions.

I think this is a bad video because it skips important problems like Cyprus or Aegen disputes and talks about things that doesnt matter like how much of Turkey is geographically in Europe when there are EU member states that doesnt have any land in Europe or states that most of the land is outside of Europe and still joined Europe. Also the reason Morocco was denied is because it wasnt a European country so even the fact that Turkey is a candidate shows Turkey is considered European but other problems mainly the fact that it is a majority muslim country and Cyprus situation is a block on the EU accession.

Europe is not a continent, Eurasia is a continent. The word Europe is just a political stuff. And the most people forget that the territory of Easteurope was hundert of years a part of Ottoman Empire, the culture of Easteurope is closer to Turkiye, than Easteurope to Westeurope. You must show to historical and cultural facts, than you know that Turkiye is a part of Europe. İf you show the map, they make a cut somewhere in russia, but geographicly it is incorrect. An continent is a single plate, Europe is not a single plate, Eurasia is a single plate and continent.
