I was talking to a friend of mine. He called them patrol belts in boy scouts. Their whole patrol wore them so they could connect them together for a longer piece of cordage. Nothing is new.

I need to make some of these. Is it better to use oak? Or can I use a metal toggle?

Where did you get that idea from? First time I saw it, it was done by a German channel called Bushcraft & Nature and then, better exposed to the community by Felix Immler. I made my own two holed toggle for no knot rapid ridgeline deployment called the Robert's TOGGLE.
