The Forever Winter - is it Worth Playing?

The Forever Winter has launched into early access on Steam but there's a huge problem, from what I've seen it was only released this early due to the community harassing the developers to get the game out but it's backfired and we'll go into more detail about it in this video where I let you know if I think it's worth playing or not and you can probably guess what I think based on this description alone.

Still buying done my research I know what it’s about, and I’m down, they released it for those who were willing to support the game, as you said the game is decent as of right now and a lot of people know that, and are willing to walk that path with the developers for it to become successful. Is it gonna be an easy one? Fuck no it’s gonna be rough, but I’m down to play and see things change overtime and things will change and get better.

For an early access game that takes inspiration from ready or nots early access. This game is a sick, the fact that they can render these very big and detailed maps with massive battles is really cool.

This review started with some good points. The movement is indeed slow and feels quite janky, but that could be a deliberate choice by the devs. Much of the community are indeed unsatisfied with the current water system, but it is believed to be some sort of altered 'wipe' mechanic common in extraction shooters.

HOWEVER, this review quickly devolves into statements bordering on ignorance. E.g. 1. 'Who is on my team?' when in every game description, it is clearly stated that you are a SCAVENGER trying to survive in a battlefield. If you can't read between those lines, it's your own fault.

E.g. 2. 'I basically wiped out one enemy and then all of a sudden out of nowhere there were like 5 or 6 enemies right behind me'. This is because you shot your gun and wiped out the patrol. Enemies will respond to gunshots and can also be called to move on a position where a patrol was wiped out. This is what many people would call 'common sense'.

TLDR, the game is pretty jank, there is indeed lack of optimisation, servers are getting fixed up(go to their discord), but as far as the game mechanics go, it is entirely the reviewer's fault for playing the game like COD or fortnite and expecting to 'be the guy'.

Lol... did you just download the game at random or something? NO ONE is on "your team" spare any actual players you join up with. The entire point and narrative premise of both the game and it's setting, is that you're a lowly scavenger struggling to survive in the shadows of an endless war that is far far bigger than you. I've literally seen only two trailers of the game so far, and I can tell you that.

Looks like someome didnt do any research about the game prior to playing. Any number of videos from the dev team would tell you about the playstyle and this not being COD. I do agree that the game looks rough and the movement needs improvement. I will probably wait to see some progress before diving in. Also the water thing seems very shortsighted by the devs

most times devs go early access like this i to acquire funding, the only reason they released it this early on is like you said because the community asked for it. I cant understand why people are complaining so much about its unfinished state, just don't buy it until its done. They didn't hide any details about the games unfinished state before releasing it.

The game has great potential! Give them time! It is early access. Lets have a look in a few months or about a year later! :)

I think like he said it's supposed to be released December 2025 so it's probably nice to see how it gets better but I agree early early access the devs do seem to want to make a good game so we'll see how it goes

I've seen "the community" asking the devs to release the game when it's playable. By the way, how's that water mechanic that deletes your progress if you don't log in holding up?

I had no idea this game had a timer for the water that basically decays all your stuff just like vrising. Timer goes down in real time while offline. I can’t understand why any dev would go for a system like that. Some people have lives, the game has zero respect for that.

the only complaint that I've seen actually be constructive is that the water system keeps losing water even when your game is not launched, this limits the amount of people who can actually play the game by so people have school and jobs, you cant just reset their progress basically every single day lol

I get where this guy is coming from but also- he did no research into what he is playing and absolutely sucks at this game blaming it for his own mistakes.

I got into maybe 10 games last night and survived 7 of them. It's actually not that difficult. It is TOTALLY worth playing. In an hour and a half, i have 8 days reserve water. Is it a little jank? Totally. It's it anywhere near as bad as he's making it out? Not even close. Go try it. And remember, you're not THAT guy.
