Aquaponics (the practice of using fish excrement to feed hydroponically grown plants) is going to be a huge part of our future agricultural system. Bonus points to these guys for doing it in oceanic waters which I theory puts more fresh water into our water sheds via digestion of the fish raised in it

People hate farming fish until it comes to eating fish. Understand that the wild sealife has been fished to the extinction of many species. While farming fish is not perfect it sure helps the wildlife grow more.

Aquaculture nerd here, Michael chambers absolutely has the right idea with the sea weed and mussels, but one other issue that people seem to have about not only the "taste" of the fish but the morals as well. I a fisherman myself does think that "wild" tastes better there's also the dilemma of if we want to be responsible with our actions. In Aquaculture we can provide many different items to provide to consumers such as meat and live fish, which helps continue funding for such projects. Back to the problems some people have, yes they do create pollution however compared to the amount of pollution to a humans daily life they are more sufficient than other means of growing food. Aquaculture and Hydroponics is one of the many promising paths to a cleaner future. If you have any Aquaculture specific questions I'll try to be the best of help I can in the reply's

The poop is an issue but is not the main problem. The problem is what you feed the fish.

Imo the issue is always density. People trying to grow too many fish in a small area.

Either get a bigger area or grow less fish

Bro just described a proper fish tank😭 it’s not crazy new idea that plants and filter feeders reduce the bioload XD

Basically recreating natural ecosystems, who would have thought. I do the same thing with aquaponics and product farmed fish, they’re clean, healthy and beautiful. They live in a very healthy environment because their waste is automatically filtered, broken down into nutrients and fed to plant roots. The subsequent clean water is returned to the fish.

Its that simple really

If you have an aquarium, a natural one that is, you’ll know that plants will solve 99% of waste and water quality problems

It doesn’t take someone with 100 years of experience to know this

Great to see responsible aquaculture promoted in my home state on your channel. Huge thank you for your educated advocacy!

The "dead" trout at the end is still moving (its lower jaw). It's most likely just spasm reflexes.

Steelhead is my favorite fish to catch and eat from the rivers up here in the mountains

The problems mentioned here are some of the reason land based fish farms are being more popular. Most fish farms are also in places with great depth and a lot of movement in the water to avoid dirty water in the farm

I might be wrong but Salmon fish farming is one of the worst, for both the fish and the high risk of parasites (Namely tape worm)

the main problem with farmed fish is that they eat a lot of food. and lots of that food comes from catched less desirable fish. that practice adds to the overfishing problem of the oceans...

tyhat sounds great but it means that, other fish MAY eat other fish poop?. this is a floating pen, hoping the bottom is open, so the poop can float away from the fish each and everytime.

Aquaculture is an incredible thing, we started farming land and now farming aquatic animals and plants.

Mussles are very good product of aquaculture because the ease of maintaining mussles and their yield. They are very sustainable.

A way marine aquaculturists handle fish waste is to let the natural movements of water carry it away.

In all things, there are different levels of quality, and aquaculture is no exception. So glad to hear ecosystem based aquaculture is growing. Now if we can just get the rest of agriculture on board. I am confident we'll get better at creating these highly efficient managed ecosystems with time.
