My apartment complex has an app that updates you on the goings on around the neighborhood. For about a month, I saw that there was a “Found Cat” notice in the recent tab. I didn’t pay too much attention to it at first…until I met the cat. He would follow me up to my porch, and try to come inside. I would give him pieces of chicken and let him go on his way. I’d see him here and there, usually under someone’s truck at night. I had even named him Barley, which he would occasionally respond to. One night, during a game night at my apartment, a friend (mildly drunk) came back into my living room after smoking a cigarette with Barley curled up in her arms. He hung out with us, meowed to be let back out, and he walked down the street. I found out later that this his just something he does. Turns out, his name is Charlie, hence why he probably would respond to me, and he belonged to an elderly woman who lived on the far side of our complex. They even updated the notices to let everyone know that he just likes to chill at everyone’s apartment, and to call the woman if we want her to get him.

I have a stray in my apt complex who chose me to live with in the winter & rainy days. She has dog friends she loves to take walks with & kids she watches play at the playground. Cats choose who they want to be with.
