Me and my friend were in Paris 2 months ago. And had similar experience in the subway. I was litrlly carrying my bag like yours, except its from zara and had couple of zips. I was also having my passprt with me. It was cold and rainy so i also had a shopping bag, umbrella and was wearing a trench. Group of women ( including girls) got in the train, tried to separate me and my friend and litrlly sorrounded me and started asking directions. I felt the lady beside me put hand in my trench and someone opened the zip of my bag. I freakedout and reacted shouting on the lady to give back my phone. Usually i carry myphone with right hand and subconsciously thought its in my right pocket.

But very very lucky that my phone was in my left pocket and the lady was like check ur bag but saw the nervousness in her face. Litrlly next station they got down.

I checked that the subway tickets were gone and my bag zip was half opened, but i had my book inside which made it difficult for them to reach out to anything.

Going forward had discussions with locals and they shared their experiences.

Moral: SITUATIONAL AWARENESS ALWAYS.
we were not drunk, but cant imagine if we had couple of drinks and were unbothered about surroundings. So guys no drinking and getting on a subway!

Italy is an extremely unsafe country. We were on a family trip and my dad's phone got stolen and it was such an extremely difficult situation for us! Whenever visiting Italy be very careful. We even lodged a complaint to the police and they seemed to be pretty unbothered.

Jahnvi make sure you lodge a police complain because your IDs might be used for illegal activities like drugs etc, so keep a police complain so in future if anything goes wrong you have proof with police that so and so happened. Don't take this lightly. If you have already done a complain then great 👍
