Damien is such an introspective guy. It takes a lot of effort to understand yourself this well and be able to articulate your experiences so clearly

You can't learn to swim while drowning. If medication gets you to float, it's a life-saver.

That's where I was last year. My OCD was debilitating. I had to get on medication and started ERP therapy. My OCD is much more manageable now. I got really excited when I found out that Damien has OCD (not that I'd ever want anyone to have it.) OCD is sooo misrepresented. But he's so outspoken about mental health and it's nice to see someone that I watch openly have it. It feels good to see someone on a larger scale platform that has it, who is doing successful things and being transparent. This shit is important 🙌🏻

Damien saying how taking meds made his OCD manageable enough to use the techniques he learned in therapy is an amazing point. A lot of people, particularly those that are anti psychiatric meds, forget that medication isn’t there to cure your issues it’s there to make it manageable so you can use the techniques from therapy; it great if you find a medication that reduces symptoms drastically and it’s great when the medication makes symptoms manageable.

I got diagnosed with ADHD and ASD in December. I have to be medicated for my ADHD because it’s unmanageable otherwise. I spent my entire life trying to be “normal” and find a way to do things, but nothing worked. Now I’m on meds and it’s becoming manageable in congruence with systems and techniques. I also have anxiety medication for social situations, last minute changes, and other anxiety things that are apparently related to my ASD. I also have regulatory items like headphones, stim toys, and stuffed animals; I’m going make a meltdown kit eventually.

It's nice to see someone talk about what OCD is really like as well as tools that work.

I love that Damien did this interview. I got to understand him more as a person. I'm so glad that Damien took the step to becoming an anime voice actor. I think the character Laios was meant for him to portray

I totally relate to the infinite thoughts stemming from infinite thoughts, sometimes it's just total analysis paralysis thinking about what to do and nothing ever actually gets done or decided on, and meds definitely can help get a handle on it and ground the chaos

This is so well put and such a great way to explain the use the psychiatric meds to those who say people have a “dependence, ” imply that you must take meds to get better, or insist that you must not. They all work together, a different combo works everyone

Relate to this very hard as someone with chronic severe depression. Intellectually understanding the techniques and things I "should" be doing to help with my depression was useless when it felt like I was floundering and drowning in a stormy ocean, just trying to keep afloat. Antidepressants (Lexapro) didn't "solve" depression for me, but it gave me a stable foundation in that ocean, a steady enough footing where I finally could begin to put those techniques into practice and not feel like I was drowning constantly.

I absolutely adore Damien! I love his viewpoint, I love how he’s so respectful of the gender queer and lgbt community. I love how he’s so open about his personal health struggles and I think he is absolutely hilarious!! If my 16 year old son turns out only half as lovely as he is I’d be thrilled 🤩

he's so well articulated, it's clear that he's thought about this subject a lot and he talks about the way his brain works so well. I had to sit down with a teacher and do an ADHD assessment today and I'm pretty proud of myself for explaining my feelings and thoughts well enough, I have a ton of anxiety in social situations so was very, very nervous for it. but the teacher complimented my ability to articulate myself when we were done, and it makes me happy bc I know if I didn't have people like Damien to look up to, it would be way more difficult for me to advocate for myself like this :D

it’s annoying when people go “well, that’s illogical 🤓” to your ocd thoughts.

like thank you, i know that. it’s almost as if having anxiety over safe, mundane things is a disorder or something.

ocd is such a individual and difficultly disorder ti deal with. i’m always glad when people share what it is ACTUALLY like to have. instead of “you like cleaning and organizing”.

This is a really good explanation of a healthy patient's perspective on all medication, and especially psychological meds. If I were a doctor I'd want to run this clip on loop in my waiting room.
It's also a great byproduct of notable people being comfortable enough to speak about the actual experiences of psychological illness. Really well said too, Damien!

Agreed, sometimes the brain needs the meds. Some brains just can’t make the right chemicals for itself and meds supply them so everything can function.

I appreciate Damien being so open and articulate about this because there’s so much misinformation and lack of understanding about what it actually feels like to have OCD, ADHD, or be autistic. Hearing other people’s descriptions of ADHD is how I realized I should get screened for it!
