Windows: Change icon of file type

How to change the icon for certain file types in Windows!
If you don't like the icon of a file, you can easily change it in Windows with a small additional software.

I need help because i want to change the icons for desktop, downloads, documents, pictures, music, videos, etc. but it won't let me edit a "percieved type." I need help because I was trying to change the icons of my laptop back to the windows 7 icons.

I've used this program in the past, and it has done quite well. Now, on my new Win 11 machine I seem to be unable to get it to change the icon for a .PDF file for some reason. That has also been the case with a .TXT file. Puzzling, to say the least.

hi thanks i can successfully change icon for most file types, but for some reason i cannot change the icons for google drive fs (file types (.gdoc, .gsheet). everytime i change those icons, for about 10 seconds they reset back to the original file types icons. i already tried multiple times and same thing happen. the google app file types icons keep reset back to the originals. even if i changed them into icons that are built in the google drive fs app itself. im clueless. anyone can help thanks?

i tried using both FileTypeMan and Default Program Editor to change .Gdoc and .Gsheet file type icon (google drive desktop file types). but for some reason after about 1 minute, both changed back to original icons. does anyone have a clue why?

somehow, jpgs and psds icons is linked and changes is appear on both, so this is problem for me

Every time I try to click browse to change the icon the app hangs and does nothing. I'm using the 64bit version. I'll try the 32bit just for the hell of it but it really sucks that I can't get it to work! I was really looking forward to using such a simple solution!!!!

There used to be a way within windows.
so they removed useful feature to add spyware (recall).

Hi there,

this method only changes the file icon on your windows 10 only, that means if you send it to another windows 10, the default icon of that file will now show.

Don't try to run in on Windows 11, it hangs up and does sod all - despite the site saying it will work on 11.
