Is this unfair?

Getting a job can be very hard. Most times, when people apply online, they hear nothing back. This makes it seem like no one even looks at their resumes and cover letters. Also, many resumes get thrown out by computer programs before a real person sees them. Because of this, knowing someone on the inside is more important than ever. But, this brings up questions about fairness and whether everyone has the same chance to get a job. Is networking and referrals the same as nepotism, and does that difference really matter?

"If you are an introvert like me..." Loved this line. 😊

When I was new to the IT industry I was surprised to know that knowing someone benefits you to get a job even in this industry. Referrals surely help to filter candidates at the risk of missing out on some quality people but there is no alternative to replace the referrals especially looking at the vast number of job seekers.
As a job seeker, even getting a referral doesn't guarantee you the job, so, I felt its best to go along with this system that's somehow formed as a result of how human minds and societies work, and focus on the skills. If one has the skills, they will land up somewhere good most probably.

Just at the time when I am looking for job opportunity, this video gets to my YouTube feed. I am experiencing the same feelings of "why do I need to network when my primary job is to code?".. but it is what it is. It's not bad, it's just a lil difficult for introverts like me. But nonetheless I ll get through this.

Thank you sir for the insightful video as always!! I am a member on javabrains and I get to learn and understand so much about technology through this channel. You simplify concepts and make it easy to understand. I love this channel ❤. Please keep making videos.

Very relatable and relevant for this time. Today with more experience it is tough to get even interview without referral.

Well, I thought that if I applied solely through job postings and companies' career websites, I would get an interview, but thanks for opening my eyes.

It’s one part of the problem, even on a job further growth depends a lot on these social skills 😊

It's neither nepotism nor the natural way of establishing professional relations, it just comes from the same problem we deal with in other aspects of the life now - both the technological and social progress come at a pace that our society with its rigid hierarchy and outdated structure is not capable to grasp. And it's really ridiculous to create a wide network of the contacts and for the recruiters to rely on referrals when you might never see your colleagues in years working from home (and it happened to me already)

With the increasing AI in the HR space, I hope softwares would pick resumes in order from 1000's of applications based on candidates linkedin, github or projects listed in their resumes rather than referrals.

Nothing wrong with the referrals. But recently faced a situation wherein team manager brought one of her friend to the team and this totally destroyed the team. New member had no business whatsoever to be there, she had no related skills, and on top of that she was a total antithesis of being a team member. And when people raised the issue with manager, she went to great extents to protect her friend. Entire team left one by one. It was a horrendous experience to say the least.

I dont agree that much with you saying that networking is not nepotism, I think it is but in a lower degree. Suppose 2 persons that perform exactly the same, but one has referral and the other no? which one would get the job? the one with referral right, and what is worst is what you said, most people make referrals without even knowing the person in a degree that the referral means something. So in some way referrals gives you and advantage to gain the job against someone that not, what that means is that the people without have to work harder to overcome that disadvantage that in reality is not a tiny one. Manager should know that referrals does not mean that a person values less that one that it does not have it.

But referrals also give assurance to company about candidate's background / safety from froud, etc.
