I just wanted to talk a little about how I think that Gear Aquisition Syndrome isn't nessesarily a completely bad thing. In fact, its a fun part of the music making process.

Wanna read a bunch of interviews with fellow music gear junkies? Then check out my blog:

Supporting artists of gear (and music software, I’m a programmer) is a big part of it. Good point!

The calculus is this: The amount of gear you need is the amount you have plus the thing you want.

GAS taught me I could only thrive with one piece of gear at any given time. If I had more than one piece of gear, I would go insane deciding what to use first, to the point that nothing would get done.

I love gear, and my wife is never at a loss for something to get me on my birthday, Christmas, or Father’s Day. It’s a win win. lol

Every piece of gear I buy gets me making different stylistic choices, and inevitably teaches me something new. There is something to be said for mastering what you already have, but that does not mean you can't hone your craft in a more distributed fashion.

Bro you hit the nail on the head, and you had a big point in the end for example when I do move gear on, I’m not desperate to even what paid I’m literally happy to pass it to the next artist! All points you made are exactly how I see it. Cheers

Because of GAS i got allthe moogerfoogers, even a super delay, and some of the repeteated. Then i have four cp-251 and 1 mp-201. I have no house, no car...but now because of My GAS and mind-musical desires i got 4 source audio hot hand3 and an Erica synth matrix mixer and i will play with my hands moving the controlling wireless the expression inputs of my moogdular monster....i will play it with a guitar or other intrument...or without any instrument...like a nuclear am gonna fly to other dimensions....GAS helped me to get there...so ...I LOVE GAS ...AND GAS LOVE ME. PEACE AND LOVE MY DEAR FRIEND AND MASTER. 💜🙏

Where it all falls down for me is when people don’t actually use what they buy, and just acquire and put stuff in the drawer or closet, or make elaborate studios that don’t get used just to take pictures for the internet. A lot of us have fallen into that trap to some extent at some point if you’ve done this hobby long enough.

The key for me is that as long as it’s getting used and bringing joy, go for it. If it’s all just collecting dust and making you feel bad, get yourself in check.

Always refreshing to come across people creating content related to music that is not necessary focused on reviewing the latest gear. When i was working as a photographer, i've purchased many cameras. Each of them had a specific utility scénario where they shine. Gradually, years after years my equipment shrink down drastically. Now, i mostly use one camera. A camera i can feel the more confortable with to do whatever i need.... Morality. It take time to try and find the right tool to express yourself.

Maybe we need a lil more Gear technicians, caretakers, documentarians. Maybe it’s smart to own physical tools and instruments for creative possibilities.
Physical gear that needs care and attention, and it holds value when you buy it and then sell it to the next person who’s going to enjoy it. Digital game downloads and VST’s are great but hardware that’s intuitive feels more accessible. More intuitive and hands on
for a wider array of people.
I just think we need a multitude of different creative platforms to share, build and grow together. It’s a
Music technology renaissance,
And we are learning as we go.
Thank you for helping

I like this kind of vlog more than the jams and strict music making you make. I Your style is not my cup of tea tbh, but I find stuff like that interesting and informative.
Also I really like the format where you have different artists show their studio on your blog. Insightful and fun. When I'm not in the mood for making music reading such articles makes me wanna try stuff =)
pls do more of it.

Yes I think you have looked at the positives, my fav is investment and Art. Why it is a syndrome like an illness is a misnomer. But, there are lots of manufacturers and most music related youtube channel demonstrate gear for income and content. The best ones do shootouts with comparison info which help potential buyers discern their next purchase. The worst are reviews based on opinions selling outright scams with false claims and buzz word descriptions. Majority are favorable as in paid for content. Buyer beware especially buzz around a new product of plugin, plugins are a one time purchase and often license's cannot be transferred.

Perhaps it was alluded to, but another point in favor of acquiring gear is learning. It is intrinsically enjoyable and empowering to learn how gear works, like the relationship between the different ways to chain pedals or the relationship between pedals and amps. My only caution is a positive one: a person will enjoy gear more if they take the time to learn a new item inside and out before the next purchase. - Dave
