STORM!! SCHIPHOL, KLM GEVAARLIJKE LANDING B777 PH-BVB

KLM B777 approach rather rough plane rolls from left to right. just before the runway hit a dangerous roll to the right.

Summer storm in the Netherlands. Schiphol had many problems with processing all in and outbound flights.

That was a genuinely exciting landing.

I am a pilot and this is a normal maneuver at this altitude in cross wind conditions. The aircraft's fuselage needs to be aligned with the runway, for which the pilot uses the rudder pedals. This presents a problem: the wind will blow the plane to the side. The pilot uses the ailerons to prevent this from happening, in essence to control the aircraft laterally by rolling. And because conditions were gusty, and the pilot needs to make lots of corrections, the aircraft seems to move violently. But it is actually all done in a purposefully and controlled manner, simply readying the aircraft for landing and reacting to the gusty wind. If things would have been too dangerous, the pilot would have aborted the landing attempt, which can be done even until after the aircraft has touched the runway. He didn't and landed in total control. A specialist at work.

Those Boeing 777 are something else. Plus the pilot had big ones for sticking with his own knowledge and experience flying. Thumbs up.

Pfff... Dat was inderdaad een spectaculaire landing. Knap werk van de piloot onder die omstandigheden! Was er zelf ook bij en heb ook nog een filmpje van 10 minuten  geplaatst. Had niet eerder zoveel doorstarts gezien. Bedankt voor het delen!

I was on this plane, coming from KIX. We did a go-around once before this, so maybe we were low on fuel. I was expecting to be in Brussels or Dusseldorf that night, and was a bit surprised at the second attempt to land. Lots of people were puking around me, and when I got off, the chief purser was as white as a ghost. It was a pretty scary ride; I thought we might have had a wing strike at that last point. The wind broke windows in the airport that day. Altogether a pretty unpleasant experience.
