If you're in a one-on-one tank fight, something has already gone significantly wrong.

A significant advantage of the Firefly was that 2150 were built compared to 400 Jagdpanther. Oh and the Fireflies had fuel.

As in most tank fights, it comes down to who sees who first and shoots.

This is a Tank destroyer, an assault gun. Which meant it had no turret. It HAD to be used in specific situations where it couldn't be easily flanked.

Let me point out that in the imperial war museum in London there is a Jagd panther.. knocked out by a Cromwell.

Let's not forget about Jackson TD with the 90mm gun ;)

The Jagdpanther has limited abilty outside of static defence. The Shermans could engage ATG's with HE effectively, and usually managed to manoeuvre to the side of a Jagdpanther, or force it to reface in a different direction forcing it to present its side armour. It was actually a poor vehicle in Normandy, as although it was lethal, it was frequently forced to fight at close ranges, unable to exploit it's weapon, nor the armour. It was also unreliable, and many were abandoned through lack of fuel, or mechanical breakdown. Out on the Russian Steppes, it was a truly formidable weapon.

The jagdpanther had problems that had nothing to do with the design. They didn’t go into production until December 1943, and production was frustratingly slow. The tanks also lacked spare parts. The crews often lacked training in those new tanks. And after the Soviets overran the Romanian oil fields in August 1944, they also lacked fuel. It was the lack of fuel that stopped the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge.

And the worst thing about the Jagdpanther was getting it to the frontlines without it breaking

During battle, Fireflies would stay behind in hidden positions and cover the 75 mm Shermans as they pushed forward, eliminating any enemy tanks that revealed themselves when they opened fire on the advancing Shermans, and moving forward only when the standard Shermans had secured the area or when the Fireflies could no longer cover them.

As you can see the advantage that the king tiger had was that it was built like a bunker on treads with the only disadvantages being that few were built, had an engine begging for mercy, there being next to no fule left to get this thing to move, was to heavy to drive across most bridges and those problems pale in comparison to the commander as he looks up and sees that P51 screaming down at his tank to drop his two 100lbs bombs. There's a reason that most of the combat loses of the king tigers were to aircraft or from the crew scuttling the tank when it ran out of fule
Edit: my bad miss heard them say jagdtiger instead of jagdpanther, replace king tiger with jagdpanther

Thunderbolt circling overhead, "Your armor is no match for my 500lbs bombs!"

The 50mm side armour was easy to penetrate for even the standard sherman, surely? The issue was just getting round to it.

Just one pedantic point to add. The Firefly was not the only 17-pdr armed allied tank at the time, and the A30 Challenger featured the same armament on top of a much more mobile chassis with roughly the same silhouette (actually being slightly shorter than the firefly), while having comparable armour and an additional loader.

The Sherman hull armor was 70mm thick, and angled, giving it an effective armor thickness of nearly 100mm, about the same as the front plate of the Tiger. It was by no means "paper thin".

now that i thought about, i think i've never ever penetrated the frontal armor of a jagdpanther with a firefly in warthunder

If two tanks can penetrate each other's armor just as effectively, in a head to head, armor doesn't matter at all, so the Sherman firefly having paper thin armor is moot in this specific matchup. Statistically at that stage of the war, whoever saw the other tank first was usually the winner anyways.

I'm sure the Jagtpather in the German tank museum was knocked out by a Comet using sabot.

Jagdpanther: oh, an allied tank, I shall destroy it!

*the horde of infantry walking with the allied tank: and we took that personally.
