you know, you're a good journalist if you can convince dr doom to recruit a super hero to become his underling

I prefer the reason from the 90’s animated series. Where Jonah revealed that his wife was killed by a mask gangster, because the mob wanted to send a message to him in order to stop whatever he was investigating.

I heard the version of his backstory being that his father was a war vet who became abusive to him and his mother growing up even as everyone saw him as a war hero, Jameson grew to be highly suspicious of anyone calling themselves a hero because if it and vowed to be a better father to his son. Which is why he's proud of his army/astronaut son and hates Spider-Man since he's suspicious that he wears a mask

"Do you know why JJJ hates spider-man?"
BECAUSE HE'S A MENACE TO SOCIETY!!

I like the idea of Peter being forced to tell JJ the truth about him being Spiderman. Then JJ continues to act like normal but goes out of his way to cover for Peter at work when he has to be Spiderman.

I know why JJJ hates everyone. He was betrayed by the only person he trusted. His barber

In one version of his back story, JJJ father was a military officer. While among his neighbors and coworkers, his father put on a friendly and charming facade. But behind closed doors, his father was a short tempered, violent man. This caused JJJ to develop a cynical worldview. In his eyes, everyone has something to hide.

I like the fan interpretation that JJJ actually secretly knows Peter is Spider-Man, but chooses to still be hard on him because he feels Spider-Man needs a negative force to urge him to be better and spur him to continue being a hero.

When Spider-man was a daily comic strip, we found out another reason. JJJ did an expose on the KKK and hated that they did their evil behind hoods so no one knew who they were. That made him suspicious of anyone wearing a mask, even a hero like Spider-man.

Did you know Stan Lee described Jonah as a version of himself if he was angry all the time

Jameson: "I'm not saying he doesn't do any good. What I AM saying is that he CREATES more problems than he solves."

Also Jameson: "SPIDER-MAN EATS PIGEONS!"

My favorite version of why JJ hates masked vigilantes in general is his Ultimate universe version, where his son died of a space accident and calls him a real hero instead of those who wear masks.

I don't know which comic it's from, but one explanation that has been used was that JJs son was an astronaut, but when he went to space his story got overshadowed by spiderman in the newspaper.

I prefer the version where his son was an astronaut who was a super soldier and safe the world but no one remembers him saying "that man was a hero. But when Spiderman does something people called him a hero." It's only when he discovers that Spiderman was Peter he wanted stopped because he always saw a son in Peter and know that Peter is a good person.
His son is also the reason his a big fan of captain America

So what about the time the Green Goblin crashed into J. Jonah’s office and asked where the person who photographs Spiderman for the bugle was, and Jonah lied to protect Peter?

EDIT: I can’t believe I have to post this edit, but for everyone who keeps responding to my initial comment, here you go. I was defending JJJ, asking a question to contradict what the video was saying about him. 🤦‍♂️ Based on everyone’s comment it sounds like none of you even watched the video or didn’t read my comment correctly.

JJJ just became too relatable and it hurts, thanks for the tears 😅😂😭

I prefer my head canon of the Raimi film. He does it because the constant battle against negative attention is what keeps him trying his best. It's knowing that no matter what he does, he will Always have to keep proving himself. The world Needs Spider-Man. Spider-Man Can't fail. J.J. keeps pushing Spidey down, so that he can rise back up. And it only works because Spidey doesn't know. If he knew J.J. was being Spidey's biggest detractor for His benefit, even at cost to J.J. himself, it wouldn't drive him as much.
Also, it's good headlines.

The real reason he hates Spider-Man is because spider man is a public menace that needs to be brought to justice

I like this way more than the other reason I heard recently: that years prior he idolized another costumed superhero, only to find out the guy was a fraud and used his status to commit crimes, leaving JJJ to believe all masked heroes were like that.
This feels way more organic and human, the human heart at odds with itself.
