I don't always agree with the EU but watching it repeatedly pimp-slap Apple has been immensely pleasurable.

Sideloading, unlocking the bootloader, flashing custom ROMs and recovery are a customer rights! We already paid for the device. We should have CONTROL over it.

The five stages of not being allowed to abuse your customers:

1. Denial:
There is no reason this feature would ever be necessary

2. Anger:
We can't add that feature, that is unfair!

3. Bargaining:
Please, adding that feature would be so bad for (obviously bullshit reason used to disguise the actual greed motivating us)

4. Depression:
Because we had to add this feature, we can no longer abuse unfair uncompetetive tactics to abuse our market position:

5. Acceptance:
Hey, look how cool we are for freely, of our own volition, out of the goodness of our heart adding this feature that we had no good reason to deny you for so long.
Aren't we such a great company?

Apple will make a keynote about how groundbreaking this will be for independent developers and how this is new and unheard of technology as if we haven't been doing this for 15+ years already

I hate when people call installing apps "sideloading" as if it was some kind of hacker illegal shit

Android's biggest strength over iOS is (at least to me) the ability to side-load modded apps. This could be huge.

Let’s not forget when Facebook used something like MDM (against terms) to tell its users to get a new app, which also allows them to collect vastly more data. MDM (mobile device management) is for schools and businesses to nearly completely control the device.

So people will get tricked, but that’s something that needs to be worked on. Tech literacy genuinely needs to be taught. And understanding what a brand/service/whatever can do to manipulate you.

That being said, I would love sideloading to come to iOS. The only way to do it now requires a refresh at least every 7 days or the app won’t open.

5:10 it wasn't some specific rule about vbucks.
Epic Games had added an alternate payment method that bypassed the Play Store & App Store's systems to avoid giving them the 30% they usually take, which is against their ToS.
It wasn't about vbucks specifically, it was about this alternate payment thing.

Managed App Distripution, MAD for short...
I think Apple is lowkey admitting how they feel about being forced to do this.

I hate that it may be just region locked to the EU and countries that force it. I’d like that too.

a small correction: sideloading was already possbile with a free developer account. the difference between a paid and a free dev account is that free accounts can only sideload up to three apps and have to refresh the ipa every seven days

I remember a long time ago after iOS 8.1 when there was a cat and mouse game between 3rd party app developers and Apple. Developers would keep making new certificates until Apple revoked them. The main apps were emulators, screen recorders and 3rd party marketplaces. The apps were for people who didn't want to jailbreak.

what fortnite did was basically make the purchase button a link rather than going through the AppStore payment thus bypassing the 30% cut since the payment will be done from a browser.

Imagine if after 15 years I could finally start unprivileged apps without the permission of the manufacturer.
Maybe in another 15 years I could have root.

features will most likely be enabled/disabled based on the country of an apple account, they currently also allow installing US-only apps in europe if you have an freedom apple account

9:07 a few years ago a team of security auditors reported to Google that Android devices were calling home to their servers using your real IP even if you had a VPN enabled. They said it was intended behavior and was marked as "wont fix". I wouldn't be surprised if Apple does the same thing.

As you alluded to in the intro, I too don't own, didn't own and don't plan to own apple stuff

I'm really just here because you make good vids + apple being forced to open up is one of the few things the EU does good

If they allow custom app stores, someone needs to program a compatibility layer for the iPad that allows running macos apps on the M-series models. I would pay for that in a heartbeat.
