Doubling VRAM? Upgrading an RX 480 from 4 to 8 GB

In this video i will upgrade the VRAM of an RX 480. For that i harvest memory from a dead donor card, reball the donnor chips and put them back on the working card. While the BIOS needs to be reflashed for this, this is not a softmod . (so no "download more Ram" wizardry going on here)

You can make a custom bios for a 16GB RX 470-480/570-580/590
The Workstation counterparts go up to 16GB and they use the same cores.
The question is... would it be worth it?

You might of just salvaged 100, 000 RX 470s for the difficulty update on ethereum. If miners can get this done for $100 reliably, you might be seeing a couple million in profits your war very very soon...

rx 460, 450/ 560/550 are the only models in skew with less then 4gb they have 2gb skews but ya, really cool stuff man ive tried this a few times works sometimes, still working on my skills

Back in the 90es I was modifying the video toasters for RAM modifications, wider bus etc..Got too old (especially my eyes)and gave up on these adventures😌 This is a young ppl game...

For the "possible to do" part, even if you're not doubling by adding larger chips, it might be possible to upgrade VRAM in some cards. For example, there's a group of modders that upgraded a 11GB 2080Ti to 12GB by actually adding an extra memory module (and modding vbios/drivers), as the 2080Ti PCBs have unpopulated pads for that. They could've also upgraded it to 24GB by using 16Gb modules but I think those weren't out yet at the time of the mod.

I have the exact same card, rx480, but with 8gb. I did some small bios modding, I tried upgrading it to an rx580 bios but it wasn't stable. It doesn't really matter though because my card is a really really good overclocker and I have run it continuously at 1380mhz since I bought it. It used to be able to hit 1410 on air with a cold room or AC hooked up but it has degraded somewhat. The rgb controller also fried when it overheated because AMD's drivers configured the fans wrong. I used MSI afterburner for a while but I'm just running it stock with another fan controlling software that works with everything including my motherboard.

You should try the GTX 970 the G1 oc edition make 8gigs or more of VRAM and see what it does this days

Interesting video, keep doing good work, but just only one detail, try to increase/ boost audio volume, and fix right channel, as sound/ voice is coming only from left. :-)
