91% seems more believable to me than 90%. It's like when you send your boss an email at 7:30am saying you can't make it to work because you're sick - something about sending it at 7:31am or 7:34am is more believable, like you really didn't plan to send this email.

91% sounds like they actually ran proper studies, whereas 90% sounds like they just thought of a number that looks nice. I think it's a case of round numbers being too perfect that they seem fake.

this has affected me strangely with time.
when i'd set my alarm for 6:00 or 6:30 am, i'd focus more on the hour than the minute and end being 10~20 minutes behind.
now I set my alarms for 6:17. Maybe 6:22 tomorrow, and 6:31 the next. focusing on a specific number has made me get up at that specific number and nothing less or more. it's really helped me to get up in the morning. It's probably also related to my interest in numbers, but i'd still recommend it

Thats also why we schedule things at o' clocks instead of like 7:23 or something.

In archaeology they use this to determine which civilization smth comes from. If its roman, its gonna measure a round number of roman feet, if its phoenician, itll measure a round number of phoenician yards, and so on.

That medication dosage thing is actually kind of scary...

Ah, i can see through you how everyone else sees me and hears me when i start to passionately ramble on and on about things.😂 I love to see it in other people; everything is so much more fun when everyone else is equally conversable in learning or speaking on broad ranges of topics.

All the programmers complaining "180 isn't a round number! 192 would be better!".

Having round numbers for prescriptions is probably more a matter of practicality. They aren't custom-making pills exactly for you. You just can't get 8.5 mg pills so they make round numbers somebody else might ideally need 11mg or 10.1 mg. You need to make the round-off somewhere. Furthermore, there is seldom a way to calculate the exact optimum dose to a greater percision than the available pills and this mythical perfect dosage could vary based on countless tiny factors like what you had to eat for breakfast or how much activity or sleep you had.

I'll grant you that the round numbers we use would be different if our units of measurement or number system was different, but percision is always finite.

Just one note!! As someone who has taken lots of medicine having specific dosages of medicine beyond the round numbers is quite difficult since you normally buy it premade and so round numbers are useful to be able to sell to a variety of people. It’s like what we have sizes of shirts. So while I do agree with most of what you’re saying, it think it’s likely that with medicine it has a lot more to do with logistic and practical questions.

Maybe it's something to do with being a lesbian I don't know, but I can't understand why height is so important to people deciding who they want to date. There are so many more important things. But especially such an arbitrary number, like if it's just "I want them to be taller than me" or "I want them to be shorter than me" I can understand that, like that would feel different in the relationship when you're with them, but some arbitrary number seems so strange to me.

Funfact: In many German dubed crime movies/shows, the witnesses say the suspect was "about 183cm".

That really buffeld me, beacause why would you give such a precise number, when you couldn't actually measure the person, plus you say "about".

Then I found out 183cm is (pretty) exaclty 6ft.

People don't believe in fairies but money is a concept that only exists if we all pretend it does and it controls EVERYTHING. Perception IS reality.

On prescriptions, it also helps the nurses!

For oral morphine the standard dose is 5mg or 10mg. Which is normally 2.5ml or 5ml respectively. The syringes only go up in 0.5 ml increments. So while you could in theory do 8.5mg, that would get messy for actually dispensing it

Well round numbers are just more beautiful and easy to understand.
