That brings back memories when I used to do facia and barge boards by myself two stories up as a young buck back in the 80's. I cut all the rafter tails and lookouts with a torpedo level duck taped to the circular saw to eliminate all those tedious cut lines, just a tick mark to start the saw on. Major time saver when cutting a hundred, give or take.

Since I had no one helping me, I would lay the facia and barge boards flat across the rafters and lookouts so I can hammer nails about every 6 feet on top of the facia and barge boards about third or so in, then bend them to the back side so the nail head sticks out beyond the board's back side. Then slowly slid the board over the ends of the rafter tails and lookouts until the bent nail heads catches on to the ends of the rafter tails and lookouts, then immediately hammer the nail heads sideways into roof frame ends to lock it in. This holds the facia and barge boards temporarily in place so you can take your time to adjust it for perfect positioning before nailing the board into the frame ends.

I'd typically cut the facia and barge board ends on the ground because they're all miter/bevel cuts on both ends anyway for either corners or scarfed joints, and I cut cut tighter joints on the ground, but you do have to know how to pull proper measurements from the roof framing.

I also hold facia boards about an ⅛" below the top of the rafter tails so the roof sheathing can overlap the facia for about a ½" for support while allowing a clean run off for the roofing.

Why does the gable support framing in your video have two boards slightly off center from the ridge vs having a directly central ridge support board? Is it due perhaps to have a vent centrally located on the gable?

Any advice on doing something similar if my rafters are only 2x4s? I have some old skip sheathing on top of that, but I doubt I can notch them enough. Maybe sistering on some 2x6s?

Thank you Greg for another great video! This is suggested to adding the overhang on an existing structure. What about making one while building also the "house" from scratch. Would it be much different? thank you.

can you do a video on how to build a porch addition onto a L shaped house with a hip roof structure and slab on grade foundation? essentially placing the porch in the L so that the over head view of the house would look like a rectangle with the porch added on.

Can you not use hangers instead of toe nailing everything?

Can you build a certain amount of gable overhang relying on the strength of the roof sheathing (or the decorative boards you would have at the overhang so they look nice from below, not covered by soffit)?

WE need videos on wide span skillion roofs

Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to add ladder structures nailed into existing outer rafters. Build them on the ground, extend the gutter board and set in place, nail

Should have built the gable 3.5” lower to begin with
