I just built a ripper 1776cc for my 63 Beetle. It’s amazing how such a small amount of HP is needed to make these light little cars move.

The 40 HP was about 1196 CC capacity. The 6 volt system was the monster from the black lagoon. I was into these little cars and the club in Sydney (AUS) quite a bit. The rally bugs had a part that bolted onto the outer end of the front suspension tubes back to the near where the floor pan at the front came out from the wheel wells at a corner where the pan went straight along under the doors. This was a factory part option at the time and a few of the guys I knew used it for rally events, dirt bush roads in mountains, forests etc where thing were under duress. Some guys used Porsche Super 90 motors and even transaxles. Some other variants could have been roughly related to Bugs, but only just !! Enjoyed the video but wished there was more info. Well done.

You guys are awesome. I’ve had a couple bugs, a 57 split oval, 59 oval, 64 and a 1970 auto stick with a 2100 cc engine that I switch from a 6volt battery to a 12 volt, lowered, air bags, and painted all grey with white doors. The 70 was my baby since it was a rare automatic. When I moved to Las Vegas in 1997 it was stolen and never seen again. My heart was broken that day

Amazing to think how in 15 years they went from junk to treasure.
Owned three, a '67 Cal bug, '64 baja, and '68 transporter. Oh and a '81 Rabbit pickup.

I owned a '65. I loved it. Still today, my favorite.
What you did to this was super.
A few impressions, and beautiful

My first car was a 65 this color, had the 40 horse for about a year. I remember that it went 5 mph faster right after I waxed it.

Pulling engine "Speedo cable hold on!". Speedo cable runs off of the left front dust cap.

Gorgeous car but in that original condition, hard to see it not just restored. Great video!

I had a friend who, in the 70's put a 327 in a Beetle.
Had to sit in the back seat to drive.
Sadly he was a victim of AIDs in the 80's.
Nice job on your project.

I like the way that you kept the original hub caps.

My first car in around year 2001 was a 1970 vw beetle. Me and my did rebuild most od that car from the ground up. Took out the wing windows for single piece windows. Redone the whole interior. Motor was rebuilt with slight performance upgrades. Painterly green for my bday with some chrome running boards. I loved that car more than any car if ever owned. They are just so fun to drive. I wish mine didn't catch on fire when our backyard caught fire 😢

SO cool! I drove one of these in the 70's while visting family in LA. I was 16 and thought I was cool. THIS would have been the car to be cool in.... Well done guys

First, I'm no mechanic, much less a VW. mechanic. Many years ago I had a 67 bug and a friend of mine and me figured out how to replace the jugs on the engine in a day... with the help of manual. The most fun part was dropping the engine. We just got some concrete blocks to hold the engine, undid the bolts (many sheet metal), and he and I lifted the backend up and over. I drove it to work the next day. Lots of fun.
