My god I love that song, and I always wondered what exactly was Don McLean tying to convey.

It’s almost like the American Bohemian Rhapsody.

Translating any art is like taping a drunken rant and spending hours trying to make sense out of it. Most famous song writers will tell you that although it may start with a few established lines, the rest is filler words that fit the melody/theme and flow smoothly. An author once got a letter from a teacher saying that one of his books will be studied and tested on. He asked "please send me the final test/answers. It arrived one day and he took the test. When he checked, he found he had failed the he was the writer of the book! What do you see when you look at clouds? whatever you want to see.

2:30 you sure twisted that, didn’t you. Faith in music was NOT are placed by faith in God. Look again. It’s Vice verse, faith in God is replaced by faith in music.

Literally none of this is correct. McClean was a Catholic, and the song is about the end of the Latin Mass in 1969. That’s why the song is full of religious language. The music that died was Gregorian chant. The king and queen are Jesus and Mary. The jester is Paul VI. The good ole boys are the priests who are drinking (no longer transubstantiated) wine and bread (whiskey and rye). The levee is the church, which has gone dry because it no longer has the grace of the true mass. “I saw Satan laughing with delight”….”the three men I admire most, the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost”
