The Huemul Deer stands alongside the Andean Condor on the national seal of Chile, and is beloved by all Chileans, patriotically symbolizing the grace and strength required to live in the rugged mountains of Patagonia. The Huemul dominates the steep mountains and harsh winters of the region, but has become critically endangered as colonization in the region over the last 100 years has pushed these hardy deer farther and farther towards the enormous Patagonian Ice Fields.

Round River Conservation Studies works with the Chilean Forestry Corporation (CONAF) to track the Huemul deer among the glaciers and peaks of Patagonia, studying their preferred habitat in efforts to help this iconic animal restore its prowess.
