3D modeling is awesome once you get the hang of it, I've used Blender before and I'm currently in a degree program that allows us to use Autodesk Maya, it's a pain at first but once you understand the components behind each tool it's a lot of fun.

You can use a student version of autodesk 3ds max for free.I believe you can use any version they released.

you should make sure the window is open since the 3D printer actually lets out some smell that is quite unhealthy to your body (how toxic? well... the pet squirrel in our department lived in a cage right next to the 3D printer, it died after we started using it for around 3 weeks. missed him  QAQ )

I would recommend using the program "Auto CAD Inventor" it is quite easy to learn and all you have to do is transform the file into the 3D printer program and it will do the work for you

oh and also, printing pieces too large will make it curve a bit, and printing something that is thin  on the bottom and wide on the top will end up collapsing (unless you change the plastic extracting speed to very slow, but it'll take forever just to print a small thing)

For humanoid figures, 3DCG, convert to .pmd then .obj I guess, I'm pretty sure most 3D printers can read .obj...
As a 3D Animator your best free bet would be Blender tutorials .w.
