Pete holds degrees from Princeton and Harvard, combat in Iraq and Afghanistan while receiving combat medals. Pete also served in Gitmo, he was a CEO of a veterans group and has written numerous books on Warriors and the military. He has a Masters of Public Policy from Harvard.

Many previous defence secretaries lacked any military experience whatsoever. He was a Major and volunteered to serve in Bagdad, and was deployed in Afghanistan. He has experienced ground combat.
